Bar/Bat Mitzvah craze!!
So, is it just my town or are there all crazies in the town where there is a shared google doc list of the local kids bar/bat mitzvah dates. LOL
It's a smart idea, but funny. Much different than when I was a kid. My son's Bar Mitzvah is exactly 3 years from today. I have some friends who have a whole entire binder venue and starting taste testing. I better start looking into places soon! LOL

Bar/Bat Mitzvah craze!!
I don't know about the google doc part of it, but a co-worker just had his daughter's bat mitzvah this past weekend and I do know that it has been at least 3 years in the planning. You better get on it! LOL

What exactly takes 3 years to plan? Other than maybe booking a venue so you guarantee the date. What can you possibly be doing for THREE years?

One upping everyone else.
DH’s bar mitzvah was in a VFW hall. He was kicked out of Hebrew school shortly after and then eventually married a catholic and baptized his kid. I joke with my ILs that if they sprung for a nicer affair their son wouldn’t have gone off the rails.

Wedding invites don't go out that early. That's hysterical

Me neither. I think my wedding was planned in 9-10 months.
Luckily my kids are not Jewish or they would be sorely disappointed by the lame party I’d throw for them.

Same. The communion I threw for my daughter was a lunch with immediate family only at a nice restaurant. I think 13 people total and a cake. Meanwhile I'm seeing mini weddings or Communions too

Bar/Bat Mitzvah craze!!
From what I hear, the temples do set the dates of the Bar/Bat mitzvah's quite awhile in advance, so I think people just book a venue that far in advance to have it done.

Its insane to me what I have seen in terms of communions lately. They are really like mini-weddings.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah craze!!
The date is based on the child’s birthday and yes, assigned by the temple (from my understanding).
I wouldn’t put bar/bat mitzvahs in the same category as communions, partywise. More like a sweet 16.

So like I said, I can see booking the venue if they allow you to book 3 years in advance and you have the date that soon. But what are you doing for 3 years other than that? Even for a wedding? I can't imagine.

Yes. He will be 13 the week before. Males have to be 13. I promised him some time next winter we'll start looking at places. He already said he wants a sports theme, which I had a feeling.

I'm not looking yet. Probably winter will start looking. Between weddings and other parties I'm sure they book up fast.

After we find a place and then go into DJ, theme, etc. Not going to rush it all at once.

Agreed. I can understand booking the date if that's even possible. But who knows what a kid's interest is going to be in 3 years? So it's not like they can pick the theme/colors/invites/etc. And why would you do that 3 years in advance?
My nephew just had his bar mitzvah two weeks ago. My SIL told me that their town does the google doc for the dates. That to me makes sense especially if you live in an area where there is a large population of Jewish kids. You don't want to plan your kid's bar mitzvah on the same day as one of their friends.

It’s affordable to some to book out in advance. I know I could never afford my wedding if planned it with in a year and my wedding wasn’t over too by LI standards.
Culturally baptisms, communions, quinceñera, sweet 16, even bar Mitzvah (only because I been to a few) have always been a big affair. Maybe they are becoming more mainstream and being Americanized (aka supersized) which is making them seem over the top.
However, a lot of planners like to reserve things early and it’s easier to pay for it. I agree some are insane but in general it’s easier to plan any big event in advance as opposed to trying to do it within a few month while dealing with your daily life. Ex. My sister started planning my nieces 16th, 2 yrs in advance not because it’s this crazy party but to schedule the planning in between a family trip to Europe and paying for school. Sometimes it’s just about project mgmnt.

No. Not starting till winter next year. I have some ideas where I'd want it and have a lot of neighbors who have been through it so can get some ideas and reviews.
Where in NJ?
