barking...at everyone....grrrr...please help....

I love my dog more then anything in the world, but he and I are having some issues. he just turned two...he's a yellow lab, a very tall yellow lab, we've been in my apartment complex just over a year-and he still barks, at everyone, well, he barks at everyone unless they have a dog with them-he doesn't bark at dogs, he loves dogs-but if you're walking without a canine, you're getting barked at-doesn't matter if you 5, or 50.
I don't get it. I take him to the dog park, he doesn't bark at all: I take him to the vet, no barking, I take him to petsmart and petco, no barking...but anyplace where he's the only dog-he barks.....everyone said to just keep trying to intergrate him, keep taking him places were there are people, and I do, and it's been a year, and my neighbors must think that he and I are both crazy.
Does anyone have any suggestions?????? He was barking at a mom and her three girls today...I mean, c'mon...at men, I can understand...but this is too much...

I wish I could help you but we are having the same problem. I would love any advice as well.
Our dog barks at everything! He barks at people, birds, squirrels, other dogs and even if he thinks he hear a noise outside while we are in the house. Last night we were on our deck talking to our neighbor over the fence and he would not stop barking. I dont know what to do about it anymore. Any advice would be great!!!

I feel your pain!

I would practice teaching your dog to focus on you instead of the things around him. Reward him for looking at you and touch him to direct his attention back to you if he gets distracted. Over time he will learn to just pay attention to you and he will ignore the things around him. It will take a lot of practice and patience. Just what I would try. Good luck.

The way I stop Katie from doing things I don't want is with the evil can.
If she doesn't listen to "NO" I bring out a soda can with a bunch of pennies in it and shake it and say "NO!". Usually one or two shakes gets her attention and she stops what she's doing. The key is you have to do this everytime they are doing something you don't want because every time you let it happen you are telling them its ok.

This is what our trainer has suggested...

Socialize him more. Take him into town or out and about where tons of people are. Bring treats. Ask any stranger who stops to pet or comment on him, if they would give him a treat. This gets him used to all sorts of people and he associates all these different & new people as good things (hence the treats).

Also, the key is also distraction. Get his attention as soon as you can once he starts barking. Give him a toy to play with or a bone.

*you have to realize that everything is new to him and unfamiliar. A animal running, a child on a bike, a bus pulling up, etc... is all new and therefore scary for your dog. They need to be taught that it's okay and that these aren't bad things.

I have the same problem!! Bella never barks at people with other dogs, or at people at the dog park. But if we see someone walking without a dog she gets skiddish and barks at them if they come to close!! It drives me insane!!

it's a what are you doing out and about without a dog bark??? "don't come any closer to us, you don't have a dog with you"...almost like he's yelling at people.

the thing is, he's huge...so he scares people, I mean, he would never bite anyone, but even if people put thier hand out, he barks at them, as if to say "get that out of my face, I don't know you"....he's a bratty thing.

We have the same exact problem - Molly will bark at anyone she doesn't know - and I have to warn people before they try to pet her that she will try and bite them.

I really don't know how to stop it either. Chat Icon

We have a very vocal Pug & also a very loud Chihuahua. THe best thing in the world that I taught them is "Watch me" It is great to distract them, and works wonders not only with barking, but also if they lose focus during a heel or walk command. In conjunction with the verbal watch me, I also will make like a "#1" sign with my hand & bring it close to my nose. The motion also helps to distract them. When you practice it, have a treat in that hand for the first few times & treat them when they make eye contact & calm down. Eventually lose the treat in the hand, but still treat them after they do the command you are asking. I also pair it with "Watch me" and then "Sit". Now all I have to say is Watch me & they stop & sit.
