Baseball Fans -- Q about the All Star Game
Here's a question for ALL my baseball afficionados
In your opinion, if you have been selected as a pitcher in the All-Star game, which should take precendence?
1. Representing your team and the baseball fans by playing in the All Star game, realizing it is a tremendous honor that the fans have selected you?
2. Declining the offer, putting your team first and reducing your risk of injory and pitching on few days rest.
In case you don't know where I am going with this, Pedro Martinez got selected for the All Star game, but there is a chance he will decline playing because his last start before the game will be that previous Sunday, meaning that he would be working the All Star game on 2 days rest. Basically, he has said that the Mets come first.
I am all in agreement with putting the team first, wanted to get your thoughts.

I think that it's great that Pedro wants to put his team first.

Re: Baseball Fans -- Q about the All Star Game
I feel that players that are chosen should play because it is a great honor to be selected by the fans plus you never know when you will be selected to the All Star game again but in Pedro's situation I agree with him. With 2 days rest, the team comes first. And this is coming from a Yankee fan.

The problem with this though is... remember the all-star games count now.
Winner gets home field advantage in the WS... which makes a BIG difference.

excellent point rich, that COMPLETELY slipped my mind
that makes this question a whole lot more interesting doesn't it.
I still the team has to come first though. After all, home field advantage in the WS means nothing if your team isn't playing in it

Re: Baseball Fans -- Q about the All Star Game
I do think it is admirable that Pedro wouldn't play in the games...
I do think that he probably should sit it out. I know this isn't going to be a favorable response, but i think that Pedro is a HUGE Met factor. I think that should something happen to him in the all star games or ANY game that would put him out for this season, the Mets would crumble. Having him there and the momentum that he brings to the team is ESSENTIAL. Do i think that they have a decent team without him...sure. A WS contender...NOPE. I just do not see them making it right now without him.
So i think it is best for the Mets if he sat out!

good point but if it was at the sacrifice of Pedro being on the team...a home field advantage would not matter...I do not think they would make it that far for it be of use.

Re: Baseball Fans -- Q about the All Star Game
You should never count your team out this early unless you are absolutely pitiful.
Look at the Marlins and the Astros. Both teams were VERY mediocre at the all-star break in the years they went to the playoffs.
Hell... the Marlins won the WS that year and they barely had a .500 record at the break.

Re: Baseball Fans -- Q about the All Star Game
I'm on the fence about this. My initial thoughts are that in this case, it's ok. A pitcher like Pedro can't afford to go on 2 days rest. He could put himself at risk and his health is more important than an all star game- even if it counts. Let's be honest, if Pedro got hurt because he pitched on 2 days rest, it wouldn't matter if the NL had home field advantage because it would serisouly hurt the Mets chances of making it to the WS. But at the same time he would probably only pitch about 2 innings and that would probably be his day to throw anyway, so I'm not so sure. Would throwing 30 pitches in an all star game serisouly put him at risk?
I don't like it when pitchers decline because they don't want to throw their schedule off. I think that is total BS. I also think the problem with Pedro doing this is I think (and I could be remembering wrong), but I do think he has declined some other times because he wanted to visit family instead. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that happened once or twice before.

I agree with putting the team first before. However, would it really kill him to pitch one inning?

i don't know if it is true or not but if he did decline to go see family...so what? That is his choice to make. He gets paid to be a Met not to be in the All Star games. Like you said..he most likely would be pitching 2 innings. I believe there have been players who will not even be apart of that home run tournament because they feel it would derail their swinging. I guess my opinion is that these players get paid an HUGE amount of money to be players on their team. Anything else is secondary and optional.

Re: Baseball Fans -- Q about the All Star Game
I just think that he kind of owes it to the fans to be at the all star game. Especially now that it "counts". He is essentially helping his team by going because if the NL wins and the Mets make it to the WS they get home field advantage. I have no problems with players that don't make it going to see their family. But I think those that get asked to play should.

Just an opinion, but when did the All Star game get so serious? Isnt this supposed to be a "fun" game between the NL and AM.

I know, these guys shouldnt be throwing 90-100 MPH fast balls, I think it would be funny if they threw underhand, it would make the game interesting to watch.

Winner gets home field advantage in the WS.
And guess who manages these all-star games? Last year's WS managers. Do you think they think its a "fun" game?
They want to win this game bigtime.

Gotta say that I totally agree with these points..
I cannot remember the last time I actually made it past the 1st inning of an All-Star game
BUT remember .. now it "matters"

i personally do not think it matters...
When the Mets have played the Yanks...for the past 2 years they have done BETTER at Yankee stadium

Re: Baseball Fans -- Q about the All Star Game
I also think the all star game should be fun. I hate that it counts. It's really a stupid idea. Personally I think the team with the better record should get home field advantage for the world series.
