Basement floors and ceilings
We are finishing our basement and have to decide on flooring and the ceiling.
First Floor: DH wants to put laminate wood flooring in. Would that warp in a basement? Our basement is not Moist and there is no outside entrance. The only way water could flood down there is fromthe washing machine or water heater, which is going to be in a seperate room. What other floor are good for basements?
Ceiling: We have a lot of wiring and pipes that we may beed access to, so I don't know if sheetrock is going to work. What tyoe of ceilings are best for allowing access? The ceilings are low, so we can't do a drop ceiling. The previous homeowners had ceiling tiles stapled up. What do you all have in your basements?
I know the basement pics threads have been done before, but feel free to add any pics here that may apply!

Re: Basement floors and ceilings
do NOT do wood anything on the floors. get tiles. put an area rug down if you want - but no wood or carpeting.
I have a half finished - so the pipes are in the unfinished part, so thats a good question!

Re: Basement floors and ceilings
We have laminate in our living room and kitchen. If that gets wet it will warp. Is the basement damp. I think it could warp from that also. Not sure though,

Re: Basement floors and ceilings
It is not damp down there... but I guess it is possible to get wet if the washer and water heater ever leaks.
I want to get tiles and area rugs... DH thinks tiles are too "cold".

I have tile in my hallway I guess you could call it my hallway. its where my front door is goes along my stairs and my living room. My Wood Floor in the living room meets the tiles. I will say this The tiles are cold BUT my laminate floor IS JUST AS COLD!

not sure if you watch HGTV's "Divine Design". whenever Candice decorates a basement, she uses this special vinyl wood-looking floor that even if it gets wet, it won't be ruined. it's kind of like linoleum, but looks like real wood floors. I love how it looks!!
ETA: here's a pic from hgtv.com - of one of the basement's she did

Not all laminate has problems with water. See this link, Mannington. Most laminate manufactures require a leak proof barrier be installed on concrete floors to protect the laminate from moisture. There would have to be a flood or standing water to cause damage. I have laminate installed throughout my home. I don't have a basement and have concrete floors. Depending on the size of your basement laminate may be a cheaper alternative. Most homeowners can install it themselves. Tile would be a better option but most would require it be installed by someone.

Re: Basement floors and ceilings
My Dh installed the laminate floors inone of the spare bedrooms already. We actually have a tile florr in the basement we would go right over (because we think it is asbestos)

We installed laminate over tile in our den. If your tile has asbestos then laminate is probably the best option. I would put the leak proof barrier over the tile and go for it. I don't believe you can install tile over tile so if you went with tile you may have to pull up the existing which you don't want to mess around with if you suspect asbestos is present.
I never heard of asbestos existing within a tile floor.

Re: Basement floors and ceilings
Julz whats up. This is Philby. I do not think it is possible for an actual floor tile to be asbestos unless the previous owners put something incorrect on the floor. Ie:not really floor tiles. I installed laminate in my own basement (which I am positive is bone dry) with no worries. Just install a subfloor out of inch and a half 2x4 cca sleepers and plywood. Then put down the vapor barrier and you are good to go. Not really as complicated as it sounds. I think Ray knows what he is doing and can bang this out in a few days. Good Luck!!

Re: Basement floors and ceilings
We actually had black tiles that were aspestos however they were here when the house was Built so they are really old
You can go right over them with anything including carpeting. As long as you don't disturb them they should be fine

Re: Basement floors and ceilings
We actually have a berber carpet in our basement. There is special padding underneath just incase there is moisture, but we really don't get any.
We also had alot of wires and pipes that we might need to get to. We have high ceilings, so we put a drop ceiling in. There are drop ceilings that fit very close to the ceiling. You don't loose any height room. We didn't use those because of the way our beams are, but we used nice drop ceiling tiles that are easy to pop out. We also have high hats for lighting.
