Bathing Puppies/Dogs???

How often do you Ladies give your little guys a bath?

I asked the Vet and she said every 7-10 days is ok, but since I have a puppy and they get dirty FAST, do it on an if need basis.

Re: Bathing Puppies/Dogs???

I give Lola a bath once a week - I started when we got her as a puppy -

Try not to bathe her TOO often b/c their skin can get dry

Sometimes in the winter Lola's skin gets drier (I guess they really are like people sometimesChat Icon ) But she still needs a bath once a week so I use a conditioner on her too ........I use baby shampoo / conditioner .......not the pet one though.

Re: Bathing Puppies/Dogs???

I bathe Pyxie weekly, because she is mostly exposed skin & her hair (not fur) gets dirty like human hair.

The Chihuahua gets a bath every other week b/c of the oils in his skin. I bathe him with oatmeal soap.

The Pug once a month, but I clean the wrinkles in his face & forhead every day or every other day,

The Shiba Inu is also once a month unless he rolls in something in the woodsChat Icon

I would go by what your vet tells you, since different dogs have different needs. I know if I wash the pug too often, his skin becomes horrible rashed. They just cannot tolerate too many baths.

ETA: Some breeds need the oil in their fur/skin to maintain a healthy coat. Excessive washing could diminish their oil levels and cause other health issues.

I am surprised your vet said this. Most research I have done says puppy should not be bathed often at all, esp during first 5-6 mths.

Grooming:
Regular brushing, bathing, and nail care are essential. Protect your puppy's eyes and ears when bathing, and don't allow the puppy to become chilled after bathing. Your veterinarian may recommend that you do not bathe your puppy when it is younger than 10 to 12 weeks unless absolutely necessary (especially if your puppy is one of the smaller breeds).

Above taken from this article (other helpful puppy advice in here).

Over washing can really harm a pup's skin. I didn't bathe my pups until they became 5 mths old. Just spot cleaned when needed.

Here is another article. HTH.

Chat Icon I know they may seem dirty, and it may seem like a long time. But if it is better for their health, it's worth it IMO.

We get our dogs professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks and usually bathe them once between grooming (unless they roll in something smelly - then they get bathed!). Bathing is not healthy, from what I have read/heard.

Re: Bathing Puppies/Dogs???

as per our vet - we give char a bath once a week - we use plenty of conditioner (special kind for dogs) as well as a special shampoo - make sure it is easy on the eyes! we also put supplements in her food to make extra sure her skin will not dry out as a result of the bathing.

now, when she was a pup we bathed her more often b/c she would get dirty easier - and sometimes she would have an accident or anything that tends to happen to pups - would happen to her! so, we bathed her as needed but that goes away when they get older - and then the routine, for us, has been bathing her once a week.

it helped a lot, when she was young, to use the "clean up" wipes they have for dogs - that can sometimes get you to avoid giving them an entire bath - bathing in the sink while they are real little is good too!

i def recommend the clean up wipes - they sell them at pet stores - they are great for "in between" baths.

That's exactly what I do. Works out to a bath about once every 3-4 weeks.

Re: Bathing Puppies/Dogs???

Once a month or two months is fine, especially in winter. Summer is okay every 2 weeks or so. Oatmeal shampoo.
