Bay Shore schools?
Yay or Nay?
We are considering looking in Bay Shore- N. of Sunrise off Manatuck. (Brightwater Farms, I think?) or south, but that's a bit out of our price range.
How are the elementary schools? We are most likely moving to GA within the next 5-7 years and we don't plan to have kids until about 2011 so our kids wouldn't be older than 1-2nd grade.
We are also looking in W. Babylon, Lindenhurst and possibly Holtsville, Holbrook and Selden. We are kinda all over the place now. lol
Any advice would be great! Thanks!

Re: Bay Shore schools?
The Bay Shore school district has really improved in the last couple of years. With help from the community they have put a ton of money into the schools and have done a lot of renovations. My sister did her student teaching there and a years worth of subbing. She is pretty critical about school districts and has nothing but good things to say about it. My children (first one coming in July!) will be going to Bay Shore schools.
HTH!

My DD isn't in school yet but I say "yay!"
I've heard nothing but wonderful things from neighbors and moms that have children in the system. My DD is quite the performer for complete strangers and they tell me that Bay Shore is perfect for her since we have great theatre and music programs.
BTW, I'm north of Sunrise too, not too far from where you are looking!

Re: Bay Shore schools?
I'm a product of Bay Shore school district.
I think there are a ton of very involved parents.. the community is extremely invested in the schools. They have a lot of things to offer - sports, arts, etc.. They also have a dual language, Spanish immersion program from Kindergarten forward which is unique and impressive.
All that said - I still say most school districts are fine and kids will have a good experience if their parents are involved and active and partner in their educational experience.

Re: Bay Shore schools?
Thanks everyone! We will keep it on our list. I hear mixed reviews on it, but it's great to hear some good feedback.

I have a coworker in Brightwaters (1 acre on the water - 30K in taxes - nice house!) and they have nothing but good things to say about the elementary schools

Re: Bay Shore schools?
Brightwaters is GORGEOUS! It's like Massapequa down there. There are a few different elementary schools. I know Brightwaters is in a different elementary school than Brightwaters Farms though b/c it's N. of sunrise. There were some smaller, affordable homes in Brighwaters so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Re: Bay Shore schools?
One of my friends is a principal in one of the middle schools and said there is a gang issue in the high school, and that the gangs start recruiting in middle. She was hit by a student when she was pregnant.
I think involved parents can raise successful children in any district, and in elementary there are usually fewer problems than in middle/high school.

Re: Bay Shore schools?
My sister and I are both products of Bay Shore schools. We both excelled there (they have a great honors/accelerated program). My nephew is in elementary school in Bay Shore and is doing great. Both my sister and I are located in Brightwaters farms.

OMG! That's horrible! I think it might get the mixed reviews b/c of the hs issues. We plan to move well before middle school.
