Try reposting this on the Teacher Board as well. Lots of helpful stuff there too!

Re: Becoming a Teacher...
I tried last summer..I work in HR and took an intensive 12 week course - I applied for a bajillion jobs, got a few interviews, but nothing came through. I was trying for elementary ed, though, which is tight. A lot of my classmates who taught middle school and high school were able to find jobs. Just something to keep in mind

Try not to limit yourself. It seems that it is very difficult to get a job if you're only certified in one area (elementary ed). However, if you have elementary ed and Special ed, you'll be more marketable. Always having the Sp Ed cert will always help you. From what I can tell, Social Studies jobs are flooded with candidates so I'd stay away from that area. Good luck!

Re: Becoming a Teacher...
Look into NYC Teaching Fellows program or the Teach for America program.
They prepare career changers for teaching...you get a Masters in Eduaction and your certification while you're teaching! it's intense...they throw you right in there with no experience, but it works for a lot of people....
