Re: Bed Bugs?
My aunt and grandparents - what a nightmare!
They had to rip up the carpets and throw away cloths.
They keep coming back !
They even used the bed bug dog.

Re: Bed Bugs?
I did get bit by them about 10 yrs ago and boy do those bites take a long time to go away!!
I was staying at a B&B in New Zealand. The bites were around my ankles and weren't gone after about a week I went to a pharmacy and he told me the news. So grossed out.
My backpack was fine - no bugs.
I stay in alot of hotels for work and I always look at the mattress for bugs or droppings around the edges, in crevices. First thing I do when I check in.
It's like an epidemic in NY city now.

NYC is rampant with them. I teach at a school in NYC and many of the kids have them.

Re: Bed Bugs?
Yup. They have had a few cases in my building which worries me. They just closed down Abrecrobmie & Fitch in the Seaport for bed bug infestations...imagine buying a $50 t shirt and taking it home to find bed bugs
I did hear that if you have them in your home you have to throw alot of stuff away. Put a plastic cover on your mattress...I read they can't climb the plastic.

Re: Bed Bugs?
It is a big problem. And my research has shown that it doesn't always have to do with cleanliness.

Nope. They can just jump into your suitcase, your pocketbook, clothes, etc. Then hop out wherever they want and lay eggs.
Thats why when I saw that 1 on my suitcase I FREAKED out.
They even said that movietheatres are a problem now...

Yeah, they reopened it just a week later I heard. NASTY.
I haven't had any experience with them but by the time you SEE a bed bug, you have a major major issue.
Everything needs to be thrown away - even books! Your clothes need to be steam cleaned - everything cleaned in really hot water.
This article scared the crap out of me

Re: Bed Bugs?
A friend of mine had them in her apartment in the city. She threw out so much stuff. It was horrible. She had her apartment fumigated and others in her apartment line, but there was this one sicko person that didn't want to have that done. She got out of her lease and moved.

Re: Bed Bugs?
Yup. Our apartment complex had a problem with them a few years ago. We literally almost called off our wedding and moved, but the problem was eventually resolved. It's a HORRIBLE situation, and I honestly wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Re: Bed Bugs?
ok, now I am itchy all over. Where do you get this plastic cover for the matress from? I have to buy one asap.
edited to add that a friend of mine had them in her apt. She had to put EVERYTHING into plastic bags & what couldn't be cleaned, she had to throw away. She had to speep in a hotel for a week so that her apt could be fumigated.

Re: Bed Bugs?
Yes, and to the poster who explained how physically and psychologically scaring it is I've been there!
When my husband and I were first married we moved into an apartment in Astoria. 7 months later we found out the apartment and building were infested. We had to move. I spent many nights at the laundromat washing everything in HOT water and drying each load for at least one hour. We lost our 7 month old king size $1500 bed. We lost our 7 month old brand new living room set- which was a wedding gift from my ILs. It was a horrible horrible experience and I would not wish it upon anyone. It left me feeling so empty and the worst part was the landlord knew about the problem and refused to address it. Had I googled the address prior to signing the lease, we would never have taken that apartment. What a nightmare!!
Seriously though, bedbugs are not a joke. When I first found out from a tenant in the lobby, I was like what? I had no idea the havoc they would cause.

Re: Bed Bugs?
My friend just moved into a new apartment with her boyfriend. Within a week they realized it was infested. It seriously almost broke up their relationship. It was so stressful; they ended up moving out. She even had to keep it from her friends because no one wanted to hang out with her!

Re: Bed Bugs?
I work in homecare in Manhattan and its an occupational hazard!!
I heard our office had em but I never saw any, but I didn't want to sit or put my stuff down!!!
One night I got a ride in a car from a nurse and the next morning dh found one (thank god it was only one!!!) on our loveseat where i put my coat the night before! I actually posted about that on here. We both flipped our wigs. I ran all my $hit I was wearing to that night to the dry cleaners, we quadruple checked the rest of the whole apt, thank god it looked like he was the only hitchhiker from her car. I was mortified beyond.
When I make home visits I don't sit or place my bag down.

Re: Bed Bugs?
yup, my sister was tormented by them. They tried everything to get rid of them but ultimately she had to move (she lives in NYC). They just kept coming through the walls from the apartment next door.
