I teach in West Babylon - FM me for any questions you have about yoga....
A huge misconception is that in order to do yoga you need the ability to bend into a pretzel - NOT TRUE!
Yoga is for everyone!! Just stay clear right now of vinyasa or ashtanga, some can be intense for your first experience. You'll love it!

OMG ITA.
I made the mistake of trying vinyasa yoga as my first yoga attempt... and let me just say that I now have a bulging disk in my back which is pinching my nerves and requiring lumbar epidurals to ease the pain!
I'll also add that I'm the LEAST flexible person and really wanted to try yoga - but I think I just picked the wrong one.. and now with my back issues, I can barely bend down to touch my knees without being in excruciating pani - so looks like I'm really missing out!

I'm so sorry that was your first experience
I know some yoga teachers will work with people with bulging discs (just very careful on the back bends which depends on where the disc is bulging).
Or maybe try yoga therapy?

I know there's Dahn Yoga Studio in Smithtown on Main St. I don't really know anything about it though... but they have a couple of places

Re: begginer's Yoga classes?
Check your library or local JCC. The BEST teacher I have had yet teaches a class at the library and it's small enough where she can really work with you...good luck..I love yoga!

Re: begginer's Yoga classes?
They changed the class this Thursday to 6:30 instead of 8:00. Not sure if they did that today and you have an older schedule. They put a sign up. I am so glad it is earlier. Def come!

How is Hatha yoga for a complete beginner? My library offers it on the weekend thought I might try it out

Hatha is terrific. Def try it out. It's kind of like a little bit of everything rolled into one class - touches on multiple techniques.
If you want to know a little more, check out Rodney Yee DVDs or his website. He's a well known Hatha yoga teacher.
