Being friends with the boss
Okay, so like many of you, my boss is one of my best friends. She is my main support (as I live far away from family) and my confidant (apart from my husband) She is the one who I call first in an emergency, with good news and bad news, I would trust her with my life and my childs life...
But at the moment I am not happy at work and I am in a constant debate on how much I should be telling her about this...
I have confided this to her today and she said that I can tell her everything, she can draw the line at what I am telling her as a friend and what I am telling her as a boss.
Whats your opinin on this?

I would definitely leverage your close friendship with her if you are not completely happy with your job.
I would maybe find some choice words to explain how you feel.
good luck

Re: Being friends with the boss
It would depend on your reasons for your unhappiness. Is it something fixable? Is it something she is responsible for?
If you confide in her, it has to be as a boss. I'm not saying she won't support you if you decide to leave, move on. I am saying that there is a very vague line.
I've had people gripe about work to me many times saying "I"m talking to you as a friend, not as HR." Unfortunately some of the things they confided in me affect our business.

Re: Being friends with the boss
My unhappiness is to do with a few things, one is not wanting to work full stop and wanting to be at home with my little boy. The other is just the size of the team that we are in now and the workload. And my own sort of self confidence issues at the moment, whereas I feel like I am a complete dumbas.s and I can't do anything right. The Ops manager, on the other hand, does NOT feel that way about me...
Do my gripes affect the business? Well, if I were to leave they would affect some relationships with big clients...
Its all a saga now...
But at the end of the day, I just want to be home with my boy.
eta...I should say that the workload is not too much, its just sort of not consistant enough...could just be the fact that all the Brits are on holiday at the minute, but its just so boring at the moment!!!

Re: Being friends with the boss
I have been close friends with people I supervised. They were honest about work situations, workload. It was fine with me and I always did what I could to change bad situations. I think we were happy and the team was stronger because of our friendships.

I have the same situation. I'm the boss and one of my employees is a good friend.
We were friends before I became her boss, so we didn't change that.
She does vent to me less than before, as expected, but when she does vent I take it into account and I know when it is something I NEED to take action on and when I don't. And I'm always careful that I'm not giving her special or lesser treatment than my other ees.
A good boss knows how to handle that work-wise and a good friend knows how to handle it relationship-wise.

But do you take action on something that she tells you in confidence.

hey, racheeee. There was a situation for me when I just didn't want to be at the office anymore. I went freelance after getting freelance work, and now work form home.
Could be worth a try to arrange to work from home a few days a week!?!?

I am managing a team, and a lot of the work needs to be done in the office. I wish I could work from home, but I can't. I work 4 days a week...
