Being induced instead of waiting?
I was just curious as to why doctors are wanting to induce PG women instead of letting nature take it's course? So many women on here and people I know personally are being induced lately I was just wondering why? From my experience my doctors won't induce unless there's a necessary reason. Baby could be big, waaay past their due date, etc. I just know of many women who are being induced just because they don't feel like being PG anymore. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I mean I had a scheduled c-section but it was because of a big baby. I know PG gets very uncomfortable towards the end (I've had 2 almost 11lbs babies) but from what I've heard being induced makes the labor more painful? I guess for me, unless there was a reason why I would wait as long as I could. It's also very annoying that doctors change what's good and what's bad from year to year. This post wasn't intended to upset anyone I was just wondering as to why doctors are insisting on inductions now a days? A few years back, it was like pulling teeth to get a doctor to do it. Please don't get offended!

Re: Being induced instead of waiting?
I was 10 days late with my son, so they chose to induce... I hated it. I went in Tuesday morning, and they used something called a Meso (sp?) tablet at 9 am, and then again at around 5 pm. It caused me to have horrible contractions and not dialate. I couldnt sleep at all, even with morphine, and continued to have contractions and barely dialate until about Wednesday afternoon when they finally gave me a drip to jump start things and broke my water. I finally got an epidural around 11pm that night, and pushed until 3am Thrusday when he popped out! Once he was out I hemorraghed for almost an hour and lost a litre of blood, which they said was most likely due to the long process.... so for me, induction was horrible!! But it was all worth it in the end :)

Re: Being induced instead of waiting?
My doctor did not think about induction until I was after one week late. Then, he scheduled me to be induced when I was 13 days late and that was only because of Thanksgiving! Or else he would have waited even longer!
I ended up going on my own

Re: Being induced instead of waiting?
I had the option of being induced with DD as long as i had made some progress on my own.
My dr's admitted they do it more often since they have a large practice (6 drs) and many women like to guarantee they have their dr to deliver the baby, especially since 2 of the 6 dr's DO NOT take call.
For me, I saw all the dr's, so it didn't matter, i actually scheduled my induction, but wound up going into labor on my own the day before anyway.
Therefore i didn't need to induce. I did need pitocin anyways though since my contraction slowed and became erratic when i got my epi after the doc broke my water.

Re: Being induced instead of waiting?
I was a week overdue when they gave me an induction date for the following week, I was all gung ho about it because my parents were visiting and I was keen to have them here for as long as I could while the baby was new. I was induced on day 9 overdue and the kid was born on day 11 overdue. Now, I didn't have a bad experience per se...but I spent 3 days in labor and it was very long and drawn out and painful. I think lots of women think they are going to go in, be induced and the baby would be there within hours. What they don't tell you is that induction is like going from zero to sixty contraction wise in minutes! It is very painful...
For me the worst bit was that I was in the hospital for 3 days already before the baby was born, I didn't sleep a wink for all that time, I was in labor for all that time....looking back on it, it was a nightmare! Next baby I am not going to choose induction (unless its for serious medical reasons) and I am going to wait it out at home, with my own food, my own bed, my own toilet etc...

Re: Being induced instead of waiting?
I was induced 1 week late although the Dr. was ready to schedule me for induction on my due date...I said no, let's let things happen on their own. My induction went extremely well and it was a great labor experience - but I was 3cm and 25% already so I was well on my way. They said I was a perfect candidate. I have heard it not go so wel for others also, I guess it just depends.

Re: Being induced instead of waiting?
Your labor might need to be induced if the risks of prolonging your pregnancy are higher than the risks of delivering your baby right away. The most common reasons for this include: • Your water breaks and your labor doesn't start on its own within a reasonable amount of time. (Exactly how long that is will depend on your healthcare practitioner and your particular situation.)
• You're still pregnant one to two weeks past your due date. Most practitioners won't let you wait longer than that to give birth because it puts you and your baby at greater risk for a host of problems. For example, it's more likely you'll develop an infection in your uterus that could be dangerous for your baby, or that your placenta will stop functioning properly, which could lead to a stillbirth or a baby born with serious problems. What's more, your labor is more likely to be prolonged or stalled, both you and your baby have an increased risk of injury during a vaginal delivery, and your chances of needing a c-section are higher.
• Tests show that, for whatever reason, your placenta isn't functioning properly, you have too little amniotic fluid, or your baby isn't thriving or growing as he should.
• You develop preeclampsia, a serious condition that can endanger your health and restrict the flow of blood to your baby.
• You have a chronic or acute illness — such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or kidney disease — that threatens your health or the health of your baby.
• You've previously had a full-term stillbirth

Re: Being induced instead of waiting?
I was induced due to my history of infertility and my doctor was concerned about my uterus holding the baby longer than it needed to. I thought my induction was a wonderful process and would do it again.

Re: Being induced instead of waiting?
Thanks girls! Like I said I was just curious.
For me, with my 1st PG I went into labor the day before my scheduled c-section (5 days early), and with my 2nd PG I didn't go into labor, but I was scheduled 10 days early so I wouldn't go into labor and I wanted a particular doctor to do the c-section.
Thanks for sharing!
