being promoted within the company
Have you ever been promoted within your company? Can you please tell me what percentage your salary has gone up with that promotion and how many levels up you went?
There is position currently open in my department because another designer left the company. I will most likely be put in her place. Well, I am the only one who will be able to do the job and unofficially I already am doing it. I found out before she left that she only made about 10% more that me (and I am majorly underpaid) even though her title was a level above mine. I am just trying to understand what do expect...

Re: being promoted within the company
In general internal promotions are usually pretty dissapointing ( like a little more than your annual increase) ..they pay less than if they had to hire from outisde
hopefully they will surprise you
good luck and congratulations

Re: being promoted within the company
Traditionally, when you get promoted within a company, your increase is less than if you would have gotten the job from outside of the company. It's usually more difficult to negotiate a higher salary from within.
The promotions I've received from within have been between 10-12% of base salary. Going outside, the increases have been much more significant. I think you really have to look at the opportunity to move up in a company, that you are comfortable in and hopefully really like. And will look great on your resume.

Re: being promoted within the company
I was promoted 3 times from within.
My first was a 12% bump The 2nd was 5% The third was 5%
Like the other posters have said, it's much harder to negotiate a salary from within.

Re: being promoted within the company
I have been promoted once, and got a 10% increase in pay. DH is currently going through the process, and we hoping for a HUGE increase in pay because he is severely underpaid. He is going to be 2nd highest employee in the company, so we are hopeful that his new salary will match his status.

Re: being promoted within the company
I went from working as a teller manager to commercial lending. my salary increased about 40% (but I made nothing as a teller manager) and it was for a training program. since "graduating" from the trainnig program a year and a half ago my raises have totaled 27%. staying in my position, my annual raises will probably be about 5-10%.
eta: I make about double what I did 2 years ago, I worked FT while in college so after I graduated I was able to go into a higher paying department.

Re: being promoted within the company
Thank you guys for all you replies! I see that 10% seems to be not out of the ordinary although on the lower scale of a bump when promoted form within.
I guess I just have to wait and see what happens. I defintitely don't want to bring it up first. I do wonder how long they expect me to do the work without any recognition. It has been a 2 week since my boss spoke to me and 2 days since th eother desgner left.
I know that legally restructuring requests are in the works and there was a request submitted to financial department etc. but I know that things more slowly around here.
