Belly shirts at work
we have an intern in our dept from S. America. very sweet, smart - dresses appropriately, except for casual Friday's.
we're allowed to wear jeans on Friday, but she's been wearing very tight and short tops with ultra low rise jeans. her belly is exposed yesterday she wore a very "sexy" cami with a cardigan, but her jeans were covered in rhinstones and a very light wash.
would you say anything to her? she doesn't report to me, but I feel like I have taken her under my wing and we're "friends".

Re: Belly shirts at work
I guess if you feel comfortable enough saying something say it...you don't want her to get in trouble
I used to work with a teacher that wore belly shirts ALL the time....so inappropriate and the principal called her out during a faculty meeting

Re: Belly shirts at work
I used to work with a friend that wore the same thing to work on Fridays. 1 time I mentioned to her that her shirt was riding up and you could see her belly, and her response -- "well I didn't realize."
She had numerous meetings with management about it and NEVER got the hint. She no longer works there and was eventually fired.
I never said anything after the first time, it wasn't my responsibility honestly, and she should have had common sense to dress appropriately at work. Hopefully this girl gets a clue soon!

Re: Belly shirts at work
Maybe suggest a shopping/luch date....that way you could show her some cute casual Friday outfits or hint that macy's is having a sale on button up cardigans and some cute camis for under it and they have really cute straight leg jeans on sale in the prettiest dark color. I would hint slow and see how it goes....Good Luck

Re: Belly shirts at work
Since she sees you as a mentor, I think it would probably be easier coming from you then from her supervisor.
Does HR have a policy that details what is/isn't appropriate? If so, you may want to point that out to her. Otherwise, maybe just have a conversation about issues that women face in the workforce, and that dressing "cute" or "sexy" won't help her get ahead.

Re: Belly shirts at work
I think it is a cultural difference. Talk to her and let her know that is different in the US. maybe make a fake example with another S. American.

Re: Belly shirts at work
I used to work with a girl that wore a shirt that said "I'll steal your boyfriend" with SHORT jean shorts on casual Fridays in a corporate office. I never said anything to her because we were friends, but omg!
In your case, I agree with the person who said it may be a cultural difference. You may want to take her aside and tell her her outfits aren't appropriate.

You know what I would say to her? "Hi, you must know my assistant... do you share a closet?"
