Belt Parkway morning rush hour question...
Visiting my parents for Easter next week and plan to drive back to Baltimore on Monday morning.
Taking Southern State (from East Islip) to the Belt Parkway but want to leave as early as possible.
We usually wait until 9 to leave East Islip so that rush hour is over, but could we leave any earlier? What time is the Belt Parkway (westbound) the busiest in the morning? Will it be lighter the Monday after Easter?
TIA!

The Belt Parkway west bound is ALWAYS a mess driving through at any hour.. You may hit Easter traffic if you are leaving on Sunday, but Monday on the way home you should be ok..

I agree. It's usually not that bad the day after a holiday...especially when kids are off from school. I mean it is the Belt Pkwy...so you never know , but I think you'll be fine.

What time is a "safe" time to hit the Belt Parkway in the morning?

I can tell you that when I leave my house at 7 the Belt is usually smooth sailing (as long as the weather is not bad) going westbound (fyi - I'm in Brooklyn, not coming from LI). Once you hit that 8 o'clock mark, traffic gets heavier and slower of course. Doesn't help that they're doing some work right before and near the Verrazano in the morning so a lot of people like to stop and look since they've never seen construction workers before apparently.
My suggestion is to either leave really early and beat the traffic or leave a little later so that you're hitting the Belt around 9:30 - 10 am.

Re: Belt Parkway morning rush hour question...
I have a good workaround to the belt, verrazano nonsense. I traveled a lot in NY for my job and this is teh quickest way trust me!
Takle the LIE or NS to Triboro bridge. Follow sigs for Manhattan Harlem River Dr(N) Take the Harlem River Dr to the GW and the you will be on the Jersey Tpk. You will enetr around Ex 18 but it is smooth sailing and will take you about 15 mins to get to Ex 14 where you woudl have entered the other way

Can you put that in my GPS? I'm coming from the south shore.. is it still worth it to hike up to the LIE/NS?

IMO No, its not worth it to go all the way up north if you're on the South Shore. i have that dilemma all the time and it just doesn't pay (especially since there will probably be traffic on the GW as well).

Re: Belt Parkway morning rush hour question...
Mel, I always find that the Belt is very quiet between 11 & 1:30.

Re: Belt Parkway morning rush hour question...
Either leave way early or wait until after traffic and have some breakfast. I would leave at around 5am if you are leaving EARLY so you are before the traffic and then if you want to wait until after I would leave around 11am - just to be safe if there were any accidents or anything during rush hour.
I want to say you'd be OK no matter what b/c the kids are off but some kids on LI are off this week and some are off next week. My parents went to Jersey today (my nephew and husband's district is closed this week) and they hit major traffic of people that were just out with their kids, KWIM? So, I don't want to say that because the kiddies are off you'd definitely be alright. HTH!

What time is a "safe" time to hit the Belt Parkway in the morning?
I drive my DD to my sister's house in Queens a couple of times a week. Anytime before 8 am, there is a TON of traffic. A normally 20 minute ride (I only go a few exits can triple to 60 minutes. BUT, the fact that school is out for many schools, that does affect this greatly. In the summer, my time was cut in half...

Re: Belt Parkway morning rush hour question...
I hate the belt... my in-laws live near the veranzanno and from my limited experience, that road is as easy to predict as an earthquake....
I try to avoid the belt and the BQE as much as possible... IMO, it would be worth it to go north to the LIE or northern state... maybe via the sag or meadowbrook?
