Benign breast lump/tissue
Just had a mammo recently as part of a pre-op for breast reduction and they found an "area" they believe to be benign. They are suggesting that I return in 6 months for follow up exam. I'm very nervous about this just wondering if anyone has been through similar?

Re: Benign breast lump/tissue
my gyno found a lump in my left breast during a breast exam, he sent me to a surgeon for evaluation. They did an ultrasound (i think!) of it and wanted me back in a month to reevaluate. I went back a month later and it doubled in size and they wanted to remove it right away since it was growing so quickly. They removed it (it was an outpatient day surgery), biopsied it and it turned out to be benign - thank god! I was 18 at the time, i'm 26 now and haven't had an issue since. good luck - get a 2nd opinion if your uneasy!

Re: Benign breast lump/tissue
Yes. I have scar tissue in my right breast that at first felt like a lump. They check it routinely but so far fine.

Re: Benign breast lump/tissue
When I had my baseline mammo done, I got the same exact results. Looks benign, but come back in 6 months. I just have dense breasts, so when I had the followup, it wasn't anything. If they thought it was suspicious, they would be more aggressive.

Re: Benign breast lump/tissue
i went through something similar about 2 years ago. i felt a lump right before my regular check up. my gyn sent me for a sonogram. the radiologist felt it was benign, 99.9% sure she said, but wanted me to have a biopsy just to be sure. i was happy she said that because i was going to request one anyone. to me, "we think its ok" is not a diagnosis, i'm the type that needs a test run confirming everything is ok. biopsy came back clear & i was diagnosed with fibroadenoma - fibrocystic tumor. i opted to have sugery to have it removed - tumor was pretty big - 2.5cm.

Re: Benign breast lump/tissue
Do you mean a fibroidadanoma? I had one they found back about 10 years ago when I had a baseline mammo. They biopsied it at that time and it was benign. Well I had to have it regularly monitored (due to strong family history of BC). This past year it changed size and shape and had calcifications around it. They did another biopsy. It was benign again but they wanted me to watch it even closer and they said if it changed again I would have to get another biopsy. I choice to do a lumpectomy just to be safe and not have to stress over it anymore. It was also painful for me so I was glad to be rid of it and was sorry I didn't do it sooner.

Re: Benign breast lump/tissue
I don't want to scare you but I think you should get a second opinion. I was 34, no family history of breast cancer and my lump felt benign and looked benign. It even hurt, they say they aren't supposed to. Luckily my MD sent me for a biopsy to be safe. The doctor doing the biopsy said it was probably just a node. Turned out it was cancer. It was caught early so I'm ok, had I had a doctor that told me to wait 6 months, who knows. I belong to a forum with young women under 40 who have had breast cancer and many of them had doctors tell them to sit and wait. Most of the time the lumps are benign but do yourself a favor and get a second opinion. Feel free to FM me if you have any questions.
