Best "genuine" Italian restaurant in Nassau/Queens?
DH and I are celebrating our anniversary and we want to go to an italian restaurant that has really good genuine Italian food. We were in Italy for our honeymoon and we want to reminisce. Most Italian restaurants around here taste nothing like the REAL Italy....any suggestions???
we have also thought about going to Arthur Ave in the Bronx, but not sure if it's worth the trip, unless someone has a recommendation there.
ALso, we would prefer a place that we could drive to and find parking not too far from the restaurant. Any recommendations would be appreciated...and tell me why the place is good! TIA!!
Also....we don't need a superfancy, and preferably not TOO pricey

Re: Best "genuine" Italian restaurant in Nassau/Queens?
I very biased with Italian resturants - both my parents were born & raised in Italy...so to me anything outside of my families kitchen isn't as good
BUT
DH & I LOVE Cafe Continental in Manhasset on Northern Blvd. We've been going there for the past 6 years and I have NEVER had a bad meal there.
In fact, DH ALWAYS orders the same meal from there because he loves it so much - stuffed veal chop with prociutto & fontina cheese.
I love the Osso Buco.
Its a small place - but very quaint. The waiters are very friendly. I would say its moderately priced.
If you would want to venture into the city - Villa Mosconi is AMAZING - on MacDougal.
It's Northern Italian cuisine, they are from the same region my family comes from - so its like eating at moms when I go there...I recommend the polenta and the homemade ravioli

I love Graziella in Bayside - very small and mom and popish. DH always gets their stuffed chicken w/ brown sauce...it is soo good
edit: I really can't comment on how genuine it is - but it is good food w/ a "homecooked" feel

I suggest you try to find menus online... a 'real' place will have an app/salad, pasta, entree (with NO pasta... but maybe a bit of potato), a cheese, and dessert course sections...
In italy pasta is never EVER an entree

What about Olive Garden? their chefs are trained in italy!!
Ok, seriously.. Try Belissimo in Amityville. (just over the Nassau Border) It has a very Tuscan feel and the food is good. Or, Steve's Piccolo Brusella in Westbury.

Re: Best "genuine" Italian restaurant in Nassau/Queens?
La Piccola Liguria in Port Washington is lovely. it's northern italian, right on the water.
I am trying to think of a place that really makes me think of being in Italy, and it's tough. I find that smaller family owned restaurants usually fit my need more.
i think most places, even in little Italy, are very "americanized"....which is probably why I find myself booking a ticket every year
wannabeamom has a good point. you can "make" it authentic by checking out the menus.
order your antipasta, primi piatti, secondi, verdure.
as long as the food is good and fresh, I try not to compare.
hell, even in italy you can get crap food.
good luck and happy anniversary!!!!

I laugh EVERY time I see that commercial. DH and I were in Italy last year and we keep saying to ourselves... I don't remember there being an Olive Garden in Italy or any school for Olive Garden chefs in Florence

Acquista Trattoria in Fresh Meadows. The menu is set up like a place in Italy...Appertivo, Primi Piati, Secondi, etc.

I loved to go to Conti's on Northern Boulevard when I lived in Little Neck. Don't let the name fool you I'm half Croatian (Pop's off the boat) so I know Italian food. He lived in Italy before he came to NY.

Astoria has a few- Piccola Venezia (very old school) or Trattoria L'Incontro are two of the best.

Ponticello on Broadway in Astoria. I've celebrated every major family event there. Pop's side of the family is part owner.

Re: Best "genuine" Italian restaurant in Nassau/Queens?
Not really "authentic" but still a GREAT Italian place to try is Cafe Formagio. It's on Old Country Rd. across from the Buy Buy Baby and Raymour & Flannigan.
DH and I looooooooove it and the meatballs are the BEST we have ever tried!
