If you have an iPhone you can download an app and it will tell the wait for rides. My friend just used it ad said they barely waited on lines.

You definitely want to get there at Rope Drop and head straight for Dumbo and the rest of Fantasyland.

we did the same thing..we did all of fantasy land in the first hour after rope drop by waiting a max of 5 min on each line and when we walked by that area later in the day each ride was 45+ min
the rope drop show is cute too to get you pumped to start your day!

Re: best itinerary for a day at Magic Kingdom
I used touringplans.com when I went and it was great! I did each of the parks in half a day following the schedule and was able to hit all the major attractions and maximize my time.
:D
Here's a sample for a family with child 4-8 yo.
sample touring plan
You can find alot of useful info on that site too including the app and crowd info.

We ate at crystal palace..it was OK, even withe reservations we waited awhile! I liked liberty tree food was really good served family style.
Love mickeys philharmonic, buzz light year, monster laugh floor, etc. Mk is where you can spend alot of time.
Must see the fireworks, its amazing. We somehow have missed the electric parade each time but I would totally want to see it. Move it shake it parade is fun too.

Re: best itinerary for a day at Magic Kingdom
All the parades, all rides in Fantasyland, Haunted House, Pirates of the C, Splash Mountain and Big Thunder if she is tall enough. She may like Tom Sawyers Island too. DD also loved the Swiss family treehouse.
We just got back a mth ago. My DD is 3.5 and loved the above but was not tall enough to go on Splash Mountain or Big Thunder. But she really wanted to. Her favorite ride was the Goofy Roller Coaster.
At 5 they can probably go on almost everything. Does she like rides?
Try to get a Crystal Palace breakfast reservation.
For snacks, the big Mickey pretzel in Frontierland was DDs favorite as well as the Mickey Cookies and Cream ice cream sandwich. LOL
