Best way to get to Key West?

We are planning a trip to Key West for Thanksgiving.

We are thinking of flying into West Palm or Ft. Lauderdale or Miami then renting a car and driving.

We would drop the car off at Key West airportand fly back from Key West.

What airline is the best for flying from Key West Airport back to either ISP or JFK?

I don't remember what airline we took from Key West...but, first we had to take a little plane to the bigger plane...that wasn't much fun...

And we also did that drive from Miami to Key West...it's a little long and I wasn't really impressed by the drive...people had told us how beautiful it was...I don't know...I just wanted to get to Key West...

Sorry that I don't really have the info you're looking for...I just wanted to write you because I'm so jealous you're already planning that next trip...

It's so funny you say that!

My best friend from college sent us pictures from the Keys where she vacationed with her husband while we were in Ireland. I checked my mail in Ireland and Phil made a comment about how he wanted to go to the Keys one day when looking at her pictures.

However, when I brought up the idea to Phil tonight to go over Thanksgiving he freaked out on me!!!

We talked about it, I said if it really bothers you we won't go.

I went to college in Florida and I have been everywhere in Florida, except the Keys. I have always want to drive down to the Keys.

He finally gave in. That is the way Phil is though. You need to introduce an idea, let him freak, then let him think, then he accepts it.

We flew out of LGA to Ft. Lauderdale because we were told Ft. Lauderdale is easier to get around then the Miami airport and it was true.
The drive down was nice, but I think its smart to fly back out of Key West. One way was more than enough

I've gone to Key West a bunch of times. My favorite way is to fly to Ft. Lauderdale or Miami, rent a convertible and drive down. It's really convenient to have a car in Key West as well.

I have flown to Orlando and taken a puddle jumper to Key West as well but I love the drive through the keys.

we went to key west a few years ago. we flew into miami and drove to key west. i'll say the ride there was great, but torture coming home. we said if we ever go back we'll pay the extra money and fly into key west.

You will LOVE it!! My brother is a cop there and I lived there for a little while! Ft. Lauderdal hands down. Much smaller, shuttle to car rental and the express way is right there! Def drive down to the keys. Takes about 3-4hrs to get down there. Speed limit is only 45-55 the whole way down and it's a 2lane road!!! One way is def enrough. We always fly NW and take it to Tampa and then hop a puddle jumper in. It's a beautiful flight into the island. Here are some of my fav picks.......

Lazy Ghecko(?)--- right on Duval next to Sloppy Joe's great drinks, fun, and not that large....

Sloppy Joe's----for a tourist trap it has really good sloppy joe's and that's about it

7Fish-------- My absolute FAVORITE place to eat... You MUST MUST MUST eat here!!! It's a little pricey and a very small place, but I had the best steak of my entire life here! So worth it!! The spring rolls are awsome too!!!

Blue Heaven-- this is in Bahama Village and it's an awsome breakfast place. Chickens run around outside but they leave you alone. They are everywhere in key west and so are dogs and cats!! They run around all the outside rest, and at the b and b's they usually have house cats that will come in an dsleep with you if you want!!! Snickers at Cypress House is so sweet and cuddly!!!Awsome shrimp omlette(?)

Schooners Wharf--------awsome food and a fun atmosphere(?) This is my favorite night time bar


Duval street is always crazy busy and so I didn't go there a lot. It's just to crowded and Rick's is a joke....if you like being touched and grabbed by people you don't know then this is a great place to go!!Fat Tuesday's, Lazy Ghecko(?) and Fogerty's(?)--amazing lettuce wraps, were my favorite....oh yea

Virgillio's--it's an italian (?) rest and an awsome wine/martini bar! Great entertainment and very relaxing!!

Take the jet ski tour, and the yellow tour thingy. You'll see them everywhere..it is a great way to see things and to understand to island better. The Little White House and Hemingway's house are cool to see but if they don't interest you then you're not missing anything. DO NOT buy any books at the Hemingway house...go to the Island Book Store and get them there about 50-60% cheaper!!! Just ask around the locals are awsome and will help you find anything

Go to Key West Aloe---just off of Duval by Sloppy Joe's they have amazing bath and body products!!!

If you're not sure check out The Cypress House...it's a little pricey but that also includes breakfast and happy hour by the pool from like 5-7 all the wine, liquor and appitssers(?) you can eat/drink!! Stay at a Bed and Breakfast most of the hotels suck and are dirty!!! Pier House, Whyndam(?) and Hyatt are pretty nice. So sorry about the spelling

Id fly into Miami and take the little puddle jumper to th Keys. The ride is pretty but its a long ride. We have a timeshare in Key West, week after thanksgiving and we have done both, definately worth spending the cash and flying the entire way, and if you dont dump the car dont keep it the entire week its a waste of $ you wont need it down there and just pick one up at the end to drive back up..there is also a ferry that goes from Ft Lauderdale .. FM if you want any ideas on the place..

Last time we went we flew right into Key West Airport and my parents flew into Ft Lauderdale and drove down.... for the price difference it didn't seem worth it so next time we are flying into FLL and driving down.. it's a very scenic drive so it's fun and you can stop at places on they way down.

I've been there over a dozen times and have no problem with the drive...I actually enjoy it.
You can stop for lunch on the way and make it more relaxing.

My fave places are:
Irish Kevin's on Duval for drinking and fun.
Finnegan's Wake for more drinking.
Mangia Mangia and Cafe Sole for restaurants.
Breakfast at Blue Heaven for sure!!!
Ice Cream at Flamingo's...

And be sure to go to Louie's Backyard for a drink and the view!!
