Re: Bethenny Frankel Charters 4 Planes to Aid Hurricane Maria Victims in Puerto Rico
I love to see this but the issue is distributing the stuff. My friend who is FDNY just came back and he said there is a ton of stuff sitting in San Juan and they can't get it out to where it needs to go. There is a shortage of trucks and the further out of the big cities the roads are impassable. Such a sad situation. The process to clear away the debris is taking a lot of time. They are also hindered by the lack of hours they can work. Once it gets dark there isn't much they can do. He said the electric is going to take months. Similar to what many places dealt with after Sandy. We at least started with a decent electric grid to work with.
They need to have to figure out how to get stuff out of San Juan.

Just curious, did he mention why they can't use helicopters and non-ground vehicles to distribute supplies? It sounds like common sense, but I'm wondering if there is some logistical reason.

My brother is a Jet Blue pilot and they have been flying donations and supplies down daily and he said the same thing. He said there is a ton of necessary supplies just sitting there because: 1. Drivers haven't been able to show up to drive the trucks 2. They can't get the trucks to the location because they have no gas. All the gas is in the supply area. The roads are essentially impassable to get the gas to the trucks also.
He said it's a total mismanaged shit show. He said that it's so sad to see containers full of generators, water, food, you name it just sitting there when so many people are desperate for help. I think the military has been dispersing the supplies as of yesterday though so that's a positive sign.

We have friends on the west coast and the occasional updates that come out are crazy. Every day they spend hours on lines to get basic supplies. Choose water, fuel, cash, or food as your goal of the day and then just repeat day after day. Generators are not common and they only run them an hour or two a day bc of the lack of fuel and cash. They've had to do all their own debris removal with neighbors helping neighbors. Some have deliveries of donations waiting at the local airport but they can't get there to retrieve them. These are young, healthy people. I can't imagine those who are elderly or sick trying to get through this with no end in sight.
