Beyond Stupidity!!! Vent (long)
I have to share this story with you guys - SO frustrating and so ridiculous!
I take an injectable medication that comes in an injectable pen (not in a syringe). You use the pen for one month and screw on a disposable needle every time you take your shot (2x a day). This is the ONLY form this medication comes in and it is the pretty standard way people who have insulin problems or diabetics take their meds.
So - I have new insurance through work - Empire State Plan which I'm told is supposed to be good. DH goes to pick me up a refill on the needles because I'm about to run out.
Ready for this - insurance covers the medication but not the NEEDLES!!!!
Umm - hello - how do they expect me to take the medication without the needle - there's no other way to take it!! 
The pharmacist said it was ridiculous, she called the insurance company and they told her they thought it was ridiculous too - but that the plan did not cover syringes - umm - this isn't a syringe!!!!
I CANNOT TAKE MY MEDS WITHOUT THE NEEDLE!!
This is like saying to someone - yes we cover your pill - but not the gelcap it comes in
So DH had to lay out the $$ for the needles. Ins co told him I need to speak to my benefits coordinator and my job to see if there's anything she can do.
This is just so unbelievably beyond stupid to me!!
Oh and to add insult to injury - they friggin gave DH the wrong size needles - can't even use them now!!!

Oh Miki...definitely raise hell with your insurance...I am sure if you are a real b!tch they will cover the needles for you.
Stinks that you have to fight for things like this...things you shouldn't have to fight for

The whole thing is actually making me laugh because it is SO ridiculous - I cannot imagine that they don't cover needles or syringes - how do they expect people to take their shots?

I was just thinking the same thing.
I have the same plan (teacher) and when I was on Follistum (I actually gave Lisa my extra) they covered the needles.
Not sure why they would cover it for fertility but not diabestes. At least I think they covered it.
My cousin has the same plan and is diabetic. I'll ask her tomorrow when I see her if she takes those meds and what the deal is with her.

You know what su cks - I was AT my doctor when this all was going on!!! I didn't bring my cell in and DH tried to call me three times!!
If I have no other choice - I'll pay - DH did today - just ridiculous that I have to though!

Now I bet I know what the issue is.
As you know I work for BlueCross BlueShield...
Some of our plans cover diabetic supplies ONLY through a participating vendor...A local pharmacy is NEVER a participating vendor.
Call your insurance company on Monday, ask them if EDGEPARK is a participating vendor for you...they are a national mail order company that delivers the needles, syringes etc...
( free)
A lot of our policies we offer MUST go through Edgepark or else its not covered....
Sounds like your plan is similiar.
I would call your plan on Monday and ask them where you should get it.
Diabetic supplies are covered under the NYS mandate , its just a matter of where you are allowed to get them from.
Insurance stinks I know....
