BF Moms - ? about amount of breastmilk consumed at each feeding
My newborn is 4 weeks old and I introduced the bottle last week (pumped breast milk). She has only had a few bottles, as she has them only if I've had to go out and can't breastfeed.
She nurses about 8-9 times a day, 20-25 minutes a time (both sides).
When given a bottle, I give her 4oz and my mom reports she looks like she needs more.
She was born at 6lbs 4oz....not sure of her current weight (dr appt is soon)...should I be giving her more than 4oz in the bottle? It seems like so much, but I am unable to tell how much she gets when I nurse her.
Thank you!

It's always really difficult to tell how much baby gets during BF. That's a big source of frustration for me! But you definitely can't overfeed a newborn. So if she's taking 4 oz. and seeming like she needs more, try giving her 1/2 oz. more and see how she is then.
I think around 6 weeks, my DD started taking 4 oz. Try it and see what happens!

Every baby is different. If she is consistantly taking in more, give her more. Just when you think you know what your baby is drinking, there will be a growth spurt and there's no stopping them then.
I don't really think it has to do with poundage. My little guy was born at 11 pounds 8 oz and he was still drinking out of small bottles (3-4 oz per sitting) until he was 10 months old. I couldn't figure out why he liked small meals.

Re: BF Moms - ? about amount of breastmilk consumed at each feeding
My DS is just about 4 weeks old. I BF but give a bottle of formula when I need too. I give about 3oz as per the doctor. I probably could give 4oz but I would think that would be enough. I don't think you can ever tell how much they are getting from BF. I would stick with 4oz and only give more if the baby seems hungry after a feeding.

I don't think the weight of the baby has anything to do with it. DD has been taking 4oz bottles since 3 weeks old. (she's 8 weeks tomorrow). Once in a while she will take 5oz, but it's rare that she does. The ped told me that many babies stay at 4oz's for quite a while.
If she wants more she'll defintely let you know!

My ped told me a quick rule of thumb for BF babies that are getting expressed BM - ounces = weeks of age, not to exceed 8 oz at any one feeding before 12 weeks.

Why does your mom think she needs more? Is she fussing or crying after finishing the bottle? If not, she's probably fine with 4 oz. DS is 3.5 months old and probably around 17 lbs. I don't give him a bottle often though he'll be getting a lot more when I go back to work. When he has a bottle, he typically takes 4 oz and is content after that.

DD makes a sucking noise...MIL noticed it too...but I am thinking it just may mean she wants to suck on the pacifier. If she's hungry, she normally cries.
ETA-She also eats 4oz rather quickly. But she usually eats pretty ravenously at first on the breast, too.

My NB is about 1 week old and he gets about 2.5 ounces per feeding I think.

I never give DS a bottle, but from what DH and my parents tell me, he sucks it down very quickly. He's ok after eating 4 oz though.
I wouldn't necessarily associate the sucking noise with hunger, especially if DC isn't crying. DS makes sucking noises/motions, especially when he's sleeping. He also now sucks on his hands a lot. Sucking soothes them. I'd try a pacifier and if DD isn't interested, then maybe try giving her another oz.

Thank you so much. I agree about the sucking...my mom and MIL believe she's hungry because she sucks her fingers or just makes sucking noises after she eats, but 4 oz seems like enough for her.

QUOTE] I don't give DD the bottle either, and DH and my MIL and mom tell me the same. I feel better hearing this from another mommy! I think they think she needs more because the sucking noise is immediately after eating, but my mom and MIL automatically assume she's hungry.

Re: BF Moms - ? about amount of breastmilk consumed at each feeding
Every baby is different. DS is 11 weeks old and takes 3 to 5 oz when I do pump. He's a BIG boy almost 14 lbs. so I must be doing something right. My MIL swears I'm starving my kid and I should feed him more.... If after the 4 oz. she seems like she needs more you can try and give her more see if she takes it. If she doesn't wanna it she won't take it or she'll spit up if she had too much.
