BF moms--advice needed please!

It would be helpful if I actually WROTE the post before posting it Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

DD doesn't seem interested in nursing during the day anymore. She nurses well first thing in the morning, and last thing at night, but the rest of the time she is so busy trying to flip over onto her tummy, or look what's behind her, etc. etc.

Is it time to start phasing out some sessions? I remember reading that babies will usually tell you when it's time for them to wean. For the past 3 days, she has barely eaten during the day because she just can't be bothered with laying there to nurse.

My mom feeds her BM during the day in a bottle. She does just fine with it.

Time to start cutting down?

For me I EBF, no bottles so there was no phasing out. I know my DD gets distracted but I just stick her on the bo ob and push through.

Re: BF moms--advice needed please!

My first DD cut me off when she was 7 months and then I exclusively pumped until we transitioned to whole milk at 11.5 months. It was a lot of work but I knew she was still getting my milk so I put in the time. I was pumping 5-6 times a day.

Are you thinking of jsut pumping for the daily feedings? If so, I think that's a great option.

Looking to the months ahead (I am returning to work as a teacher full-time in August), my plan is to wean her for all feedings except the night and early morning. During the day, she'll get frozen BM for as long as she can, and formula after that.

If I pump at noon, the way I do now, but NOT for the 4:00 feeding, will my body eventually understand that no milk is needed until around 7:30? I have no idea how this works.

I don't get engorged unless I go literally 12 hours without pumping or nursing, so that will not be an issue.

Thanks for any advice any of you can give me!

Re: BF moms--advice needed please!

Ryan is 11 and a half months old and I would say he didn't start "refusing" sessions until about a month ago.

We are down to an average of 2 five minute sessions during the day (each before a nap). A fifteen minute AM session and a ten minute PM session.

Right after his birthday I plan to drop both day sessions. A week or 2 later the morning session, and a week or 2 after that the night one.

Forgive me, I can't remember how old she is at the moment. Could it be possible you are trying to nurse too closely after she has eaten breakfast/lunch/dinner?

I always offered breast before a meal (usually 30 to 45 minutes before) to ensure I wouldn't lose the session.

I also didn't add lunch into his routine until he was a little over 9 months. So once he ate breakfast, it was only BM for the day until dinner at 7pm. But, he did get "snacks" like a few puffs here and there.

I know around that age that DS got too distracted to eat. I had to start feeding him in a darkened room with no distractions.

Re: BF moms--advice needed please!

Beth if you want to cut out that session adn you dont get engorged your body wil cut down your supply. Mine severely dropped when I got my period at 5 mos PP. I stopped pumping around 2 weeks ago and am still leaking here and there when they cry or something. As far as keeping her engaged-play peek aboo while shes on the boob-get her attention on you.Stroke her face etc. Maybe sling her? So her motion is limited? Or just pump and bottle feed. It worked out fine for usChat Icon
