BFers and pumping...I cant find the answer

to my question...

What is the longest I can go w/o comprimising my milk supply? Will skipping one or two feedings for one night really have an effect?

I want to go out for my bday from like 8pm - 2, 3 or 4am (sheesh, if i can stay up that is!)...but am worried about having to pump while I'm out!!!

I don't think 1 night of skipping one or two feedings will effect your supply, just make sure you do pump as soon as you get home.

BUt, you may want to bring a manual pump with you just in case, your boobies are gonna get engorged and be a bit tender and porn star lookingChat Icon or may even leak a bit.

How old will your baby be on your birthday? After 6 weeks I think your supply is well enough established to skip a feeding without any worry about supply. (Of course whether or not you'd be uncomfortable is an individual question!)

I would worry about engorgement -- how old is your baby? When DS was young I would get engorged if I missed more than one feeding.

He will be exactly 6 weeks on the night I want to go out, the 20th. And your right, when I skip a feeding now I leak...humm...I may have to invest in a manual pump!!!

I can see it now, pumping in a bathroom stall at some dirty bar!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: BFers and pumping...I cant find the answer

I have been either pumping or feeding every 2-3 hrs during the day and then at night I have one 6 hour stretch that I go without feeding or pumping and let DH give DS a pumped bottle. I had to do this to get some sleep b/c DS was just not letting me get long enough sleep stretches so I ended up getting really sick and don't want that to happen again! So far it has worked out ok. But in the morning - I am totally engorged. Not sure if this is the best thing but it was what i needed to do.

As for your one night out - I have to say I think you can go the time but, you may not be comfortable because for me, after 4 hours my chest is NOT feeling good...its ok if I am sleeping but not otherwise.

Hope this helps.

You should be fine - I give DD pumped bottles when we go out for the day on weekends so I miss one or two feedings on those days and don't have a problem - you will get engorged though but that goes away as soon as you BF again or pump.

You should be okay; I've done it a number of times (& currently now go 6-7 hours in between)..like the other posters said, I'd worry about engorgement...you deserve a night out though...but a manual pump may be the way to go

One night probably won't compromise your supply, but you may feel uncomfortable and full if you go that long without pumping especially if you child would usually be nursing a couple of times during those hours. Make sure to wear some nursing pads to avoid leaks, too.

One night will not compromise yoru supply. U will be engorged though so invest in a manual pump or if u have an electric one bring it along with ya. I do this when i go out for date night with DH. I just pump in his car. It isnt the most comfy situation but I dont want my boobs to hurt.

I go one six hour stretch per day.
