BFing and diet... another little one with a milk-protein allergy!
I'm filled with questions tonight!
I'm EBFing my 7 week old son who I just found out has a milk-protein allergy about a week ago. I've cut everything milk-related out of my diet and all products with milk derivatives (lactose, dry milks, whey, butter, everything). The doctor also mentioned that he may be allergic to soy...
A week later, Anthony is still throwing up after each feeding. Some feedings he throws up more than others. Although it's getting better, I feel like he's still miserable. Oh, he was also diag. with reflux and he's on reflux meds.
Am I expecting results too soon after only a week of diet change and reflux meds? Should he be improving more quickly or does it take a while for the allergy to leave their systems?
If you've read this far, could you also give me a list of NO NO's in the BF mother's diet? I can't get a straight answer from anyone, and what I'm finding online is conflicting.
Thank you SO SO much. I don't want to give up BFing - my son is gaining weight and thriving that way - but I feel terrible about the possibility that what I'm eating/drinking still continues to torture him.

It can take 2 wks for the dairy to leave your system, maybe longer. Plus, your DS's gut has to heal...so give it some more time.
I went by godairyfree.org. It was very informative, and even tells you what fast foods have dairy in them...bet you didn't know McD's fries have dairy in them....this me. It also has recipes for dairy free cooking.
I used rice milk, Tofutti cream cheese, and Earth's Best non-dairy spread. Rice Dream makes a dairy free ice cream. Amy's makes an organic soy cheese pizza. There's tons of alternatives out there. I found a lot of them @ Whole Foods & Trader Joe's, but local markets also carry some products.
Good luck...it seeks really hard at first, but it's not so bad. I did it for 10 months.

I've been dairy and soy free for a while now and it is definitely doable. I eliminated dairy first and the symptoms subsided but didn't fully clear up until I eliminated soy also. If you need any help with finding food substitutes I can help.

Omg! Thank you so much for your posts - McD has milk in the fries? I just had fries yesterday! I'm so pi$$ed! I'm going to try that website you mentioned.
Did either of you eat peanut butter with no problems? Or, will that trace amount of soybean oil cause a reaction, too... I'm sitting here starving right now because I'm not sure what I can/cannot eat that won't hurt Anthony.
Thank you!

i am okay with soybean oil...but what you have to watch out for is soybean flour.
it is in mcdonalds buns, burger kings...
basically, you will be losing weight.
breakfast for me: cup of frozen strawberries banana rice milk blended for smoothie
egg on english muffin, trader joes
oatmeal
lunch: hummas on pita soup salad pbj
dinner it is easy as long as you are cooking. meat and veggies are fine..
jessie and josh bought had bad rashes and bloody diapers at 5 weeks. doing great now at 8 weeks. mucus in diapers are finally gone.
google mspi a ton comes up

Great advice. Just wanted to add be careful with soy cheese-alot of it has dairy derivatives in it. About 60% of dairy allergic kids have a soy allergy too which is probably what your Dr was referring to.
