BFing and sleeping through the night
they're just not compatible IMO. he falls asleep at 8pm... I wake him at about 11pm to BF... he then falls asleep again and doesn't wake until almost 5am! I've been waking him when I wake up (roughly 3am) to feed...
what is better in the long run? waking him to feed, or just pumping and leaving him to sleep?
It seems when I go the pumping route, that he usually wakes up within 30 min... so I went through all of that effort for naught...
what do you do?

Re: BFing and sleeping through the night
I NEVER woke DD to feed. I EBF for 16 months.
If she was hungry, she'd wake up

Re: BFing and sleeping through the night
yeah, but I'm getting seriously engorged... I can't go 6+ hours w/o BFing... and he's now sleeping 6+ hours sometimes... I'm afraid of mastitis developing if I hold out over 4 hours
what would you do in my situation? pump?

Re: BFing and sleeping through the night
your body should regulate- if you pump you'll continue to over produce bc your body thinks the baby is eating that much-

Re: BFing and sleeping through the night
You might have a couple of days of being uncomfortable, but you will self regulate - if its really bad you might just want to pump for half the time you normally would for the first couple of days then don't pump at all....
ETA - and get some sleep yourself!

Re: BFing and sleeping through the night
Pump JUST enough to make yourself comfortable. Over time your supply will regulate.

Re: BFing and sleeping through the night
I would let him sleep and wake up on his own. He will start to get used to eating at those times and you will eventually have to cut it out. DD started sleeping 6 hours or more at three weeks (12-6am). For the first week or two I would wake up around four and pump because I was so uncomfortable. My body regulated itself very soon though. When she started sleeping later, I continued to get up a little earlier than her because I wanted to build up a great freezer stash.

ITA. Eventually you won't get engorged and you'll get a full night of sleep

Re: BFing and sleeping through the night
Thank you for posting this. I was about to post this question myself. I didn't realize my body would regulate itself. Thanks to those who answered.

I would definitely pump until your supply adjusts to him sleeping through the night.

Re: BFing and sleeping through the night
When I was BFing I would wake him up every 3-4 hours. If I ever have another DC I will NOT wake them EVER unless they were not gaining at the appropriate rate. KWIM? I just made myself miserable b/c I think he would have slept through the night A LOT sooner if I hadn't done this. So, I would do like the others have said and maybe pump or express just a little relief and your supply should adjust... Hang in there!

Re: BFing and sleeping through the night
I would let him sleep and wake you up to eat and then you can pump just so you don't get too uncomforable going a longer stretch without feeding. I can't wait til my DS sleeps longer than 2 hours between feedings!

Re: BFing and sleeping through the night
I agree with the above posters.
DS was sleeping through the night pretty early. (I know I am blessed) If I happened to wake up, I would pump. And yes, the entire time I would be so crazy about him possibly waking up as I was doing it. But it does get easier. I would go to bed with pads on because I'd always wake up in a puddle. After a few months I regulated and didn't have the problem again.
For me, pumping a few nights per week didn't screw up my supply on other nights. I work overnights 2 nights per week and on those nights I always pumped 2-3 times. But the other 5 nights per week I slept. And I pumped for 10 months. Who knows?
But, I never woke him up!

Re: BFing and sleeping through the night
I actually woke up naturally usually and would pump whenever that was...leave the BM in a bottle and leave it next to DH to take care of it
