BFing moms - waking DC up?

DS is 12 days old and does not wake up to eat.

According to what I've read, BF babies should be nursing about every 2 hours. By the 3rd hour I am waking DS up to eat. Am I wrong? Should I be letting him sleep until he is really ready to eat? Most of the time when I wake him up for a feeding he eats pretty well so I would assume he is hungry I just don't know why he won't wake up on his own.

(BTW, I am not supplementing with formula or pumping).

I never woke Ryan either - I fed on demand, but he never went longer than 3 hours - MAYBE 3.5 in the very beginning, but that didn't last long.

I never woke him up and he slept through the night for the first time at 2 weeks! And I heard it all about him being such a big baby at birth that he would need to eat every hour. He was just fine.

DS sleeps between 2 - 3 hours normally before waking to BF.

A FEW times he has gone as long as 3 1/2 - 4 hours, one night even 5 hours!!!

Don't wake a sleeping baby!! He'll let you know if he is hungry!

I am not supplementing with formula either & DS is 3 weeks today. I pump only once in the morning.

When I brought home DS from the hospital he would eat about every 2 hours he was on me all day and he would nurse 15 min on each side...he would let me know when he was hungry..now he is 3 months and now I have to tell him when to eat...he goes much longer now it seems in between his feedings and he only nurse about 10 min on each boob sometimes even less...but as long as he has 8-12 dirty diapers he's good and I'm not stressing over it!

I never wake him up and he can take 4-5 hour naps sometimes! He's only waking up once at night now and he's 2 months. I EBF also.

Re: BFing moms - waking DC up?

My DS rarely went more then 3 hours (he pretty much woke up to eat every 2-3 hours).....I think as long as DC is gaining weight well, plenty of wet diapers its okay to let them sleep.

I never woke DD up but then again I never needed to. She woke up 2-3 hours like clockwork.

I never woke him up and he was sleeping through the night (5-6 hours) by 6 weeks. During the day, he woke up every 2-3 hours like clockwork too.

Re: BFing moms - waking DC up?

i think you should wake him up during the day - every three hours at the most is what I would let my DD sleep.

At night, I would not wake him up.

Re: BFing moms - waking DC up?

When I was BF I was told that you can wake him up during the day is DC is sleeping past 2.5-hours. They can go up to 5 hours at night without needing to wake up and eat. But then you will need to feed DC past 5 hours at night.

My ped said don't wake dc if they are gaining weight appropriately. He'll wake at night if he's hungry.

i would not wake him up....mine never slept past 3 hours though, and I was always engorged, so it was nice that he was up and ready to alieve some pressure.

My dr said I should wake DD up every 3 hours to feed her, which I did for the first month or two, day and night. Then at my 1st or 2nd month appt he told me I didnt need to do it anymore. It is more about getting your supply up then the baby being hungry.

I never woke Athan up. At that age, he would sometimes go up to 4 hours without nursing because he was sleeping.

Re: BFing moms - waking DC up?

I HAD to wake mikayla up for the first 2 weeks as she was not gaining weight as she should have been but after that, the doctor said not to wake her. SHe would wake up on her own every 3 hours or so anyway

Re: BFing moms - waking DC up?

I EBF DD and I never woke her up at night. In the beginning she was up every 2.5-3 hours. Then at 3.5 weeks she started to sleep through the night!!

I did wake her from a nap one time but she had slept for almost five hours and it was in the first couple of weeks, so I was nervous. Never again though!
