BFing moms-ever hear of LACTOSE OVERLOAD/
anyone know about this? i think it might explain why my DD is waking up so much and passing gas so much esp. at night. it seems that maybe i am not nursing long enough for her to get the hindmilk and so she's getting more foremilk which causes more gas. she seems so uncomfortable in the nighttime but i think wants to eat more to relieve the gas..if you BF have you experienced this at all? how do i know she is getting hindmilk? TIA if you can help

How quick are you switching sides? Letting the baby stay on one side for more than 20 minutes will make sure she is getting hindmilk.
Note: All babies have lots of gas. I wouldn't assume its more than average unless your doctor has observed and agreed.

DS used to nurse for at least 20 min a side, so I think he always got the hind milk.
How old is your baby? Between 2 weeks and 6 weeks, DS used to pull his legs up and look so pained after feeding. I asked my doctor and he said it was developmental -- his system was getting used to digestion -- and that he would grow out of it. Sure enough by a month he was fine. If you're worried about the hind milk, try to get the baby to nurse longer. Good luck!

Yes, I've had this problem. You can also tell by the color of DC's poop. Usually if they're poop is green, they're getting more of the fore milk. Hind milk will produce a mustardy yellow color poop with "seeds" in it.
Try to nurse for as long as you can on one side. Usually, what I was told, was that when your boob gets REAL floppy and soft, that's when they're getting the hind milk.

I was JUST going to say that about the poop. I had a forceful let-down AND an abundance of foremilk. Green poops were seen regularly around here for awhile.
My DD would only nurse from one side at a time. One thing I tried was nursing from the same breast for 2 feedings (I would pump the other breast until I was comfortable).

Re: BFing moms-ever hear of LACTOSE OVERLOAD/
thanks for the responses! DD nurses so fast it's hard for me to say how long each session lasts. she's been getting very distracted these days while she's nursing so maybe that's the problem-she is 3months and i thought by now her digestion/system would be better. there are times her poop is greenish which can say a lot too..i will try feeding her longer on one side and not get too caught up in making sure both sides get nursed from. thanks again!

I had this problem until I cut dairy out of my diet. The ped told me that the more lactose I drink, the more I make. Maybe switch to lactaid and see what happens.
I never switched boobs during feedings. Also, before nursing, I would stand at sink and hand express for a few minutes....then nurse. It seemed to get better.

Exact same time frame for DS. Between 2.5 weeks and 6.5 weeks old DS was constantly crying. I though he was not eating enough. It was horrible gas, combined with being overtired.
I started pumping. I am much more efficient. It tooked a long time for DS (about 3 months) until he stopped being sleepy on the breast. He would not last 10 minutes. He would never get the hindmilk and would end up eating every hour. When I pump for 20 minutes... he gets the good stuff.
