BFing moms....Sidney is destroying my nipple
I plan on calling a lactation consultant tomorrow but thought I would get your opinions first....
Everything I read says that BFing is not supposed to hurt but every new Mom I talk to says they saw stars the first few weeks at least for the first few seconds. The pain curls my toes anytime she latches on or when I jostle her cause she fell asleep at the breast. And now pieces of my nipple are tearing off!!!! Its been 8 days. Will this get better? If so when????????? Or is her latch all wrong?
We go thru tons of diapers so I am pretty confident she is getting fed well.
TIA

Re: BFing moms....Sidney is destroying my nipple
If pieces of your nipple are coming off, she probably isnt latched on right. Make sure that she is not just on the tip and has your entire nipple in. Thats probably why it is so painful. It does hurt in the beginning, but I think by 2-3 weeks I was a lot more comfortable. Also make sure to use the lansional (sp?) cream... Good LucK!

I agree with Aliking. It should not hurt and it sounds like the latch is wrong. A lactation consultant is a good idea. I didn't know I was nursing completely wrong until I went to see one. It definitely helps.

Re: BFing moms....Sidney is destroying my nipple
I agree if you are having pain its probably because she is not latched on properly...I would say within 2-3 weeks the pain was gone and I had peeling but the lanolish cream REALLY helped. Good Luck

I agree, the latch isn't right. I breasfed Andrew for one year and it never hurt, ever! Never had sore nipples or felt pain.... Definitely call your LC, you should not be in pain! The only pain I ever had is if I got engorged!

Re: BFing moms....Sidney is destroying my nipple
It could be that the latch is incorrect. But I have to say I had LOTS of pain, soreness and cracking in the beginning and I had a good latch (the LC at the hospital had confirmed this when working with us) I would say it lasted for about 2-3 weeks and then it was like it magically went away. I never saw a separate LC just worked with Claire on positions. I even remember crying a few times for the first few seconds because my nipples were so raw. The Lanishosh (sp) cream was a lifesaver!!

Re: BFing moms....Sidney is destroying my nipple
I'm currently in week 16 of BFing, and I still get nipple soreness/pain on the right side. No problems at all on the left, so I know its not the latch since she latches the same on both sides. Ugh. Some of us are just unlucky! Take a look at kellymom.com for some great advice.

Re: BFing moms....Sidney is destroying my nipple
Thank you for the advice...
I'm now using the Lansinoh cream after every feeding and WOW...what a difference. I still see stars but now only for about 10 seconds. Keeping the appt with the lactation consultant just to make sure I'm doing everthing right cause last night Sidney wailed uncontrollably from 3:30am to 10:00am between feedings. Maybe I'm not keeping her on long enough?
So my next question is how long on each breast do you feed?
TIA

The LC I went to see told me keep the baby on as long as the baby likes - the baby should end the feeding on each side. They know when they've had enough. It's different for every mom - depends upon your milk production.

The CVS brand of the cream works just as well, and is a bit cheaper. I used that stuff religously the first 3 months...
