BFP and job interview
so as some of you know i got my bfp on wed . i'd been sending out my resume for weeks because i thought it would take a few more months for me to get pg. yesterday i get a call to come in for a job interview. the position is for outside sales where i could mostly work from home when im not on the road.
so here's my question...would you go on the interview? DH said not to because it doesnt seem fair for me to go on the interview because if i get the job i'll have to tell them im pg within the next 2 months or so and eventually take 2 months maternity leave. on top of that, where i work now i have job security in that i work in an industry not affected by the recession. BUT im overloaded with work there right now. you think its possible that when i tell my boss that im pg that it would be okay for me to ask for less work during my pregnancy?
im torn. what would you do?

I think you should go on the interview, see if you like the position and worry about the rest if they offer it to you!

Re: BFP and job interview
Well, if you get the job and then take time off, you won't be protected under FMLA so they may not hold it for you and you may be looking for another job soon after. With this rotten economy, it could be hard. If you guys would be okay if you were out of work for a while, then go for it.
If you definitely need to be able to return to work soon after the baby is here, I would probably put off the job search until after the baby. By then the economy should be better (I hope ), and if not, at least you have job security.
In either case, I might go to the interview just to see.
In any case, these are all great problems to have and congrats again on the BFP!

ITA agree with this. Not being eligible for FMLA & time off would probably be the decision making point for me since I'll need to go back to work after I have a baby. Congrats on your bfp & good luck with your decision!!

Why wouldn't she be eligible for FMLA?

you have to be at your job for 12 months prior to going on maternity leave to be eligible for FMLA.
I would go on the interview, see what happens and whether you think you'd really be happier at this other job. However, I'd most likely stick it out for the next 9 months at your current job so you don't have issues taking maternity leave. Perhaps the economy will be a little bit better at that point and you can continue your job search after your little one is here. good luck!

Did not know that and boy, does that suck for me
I recently started a new job because I was laid off from my previous job. Being at a new place is a pain - I don't get sick time for 4 months, vacation for 6 months and I think I get my first personal hours next month. So not feeling well has not been an option and I'm having a hell of a time scheduling all my appts for evenings or weekends.
If I were in a position of choice, I would not start a new job for those reasons.
Good luck!

Re: BFP and job interview
I'd stay where you are for now, but after you tell them your PG, cut down the work a little bit. You will lose your FMLA protection if you take a new job you've been at less than 12 mos.

Re: BFP and job interview
thanks for the advice everyone. ive decided not to go on the interview. i would feel badly if they offered me the position and then i turned around a month and half later and said im pg. on top of that, since its outside sales i think it may be too exhausting for me with all the driving and running to meetings. im just gonna stick it out where i am until after the baby's born.
