Biden pushes to pay firefighters above $13 an hour
Today I learned that Federal firefighters get paid $13 an hour in the richest country in the word.
Link
Biden said he would raise the pay of federal firefighters to at least $15 an hour and bonuses would be paid for those working on the front lines.
The 15,000 federal firefighters, who battle wildfires on federal land, include thousands of seasonal workers who start at roughly $13 an hour and rely on overtime and hazard pay to make ends meet.
The White House also seeks to convert seasonal firefighting jobs to full-time to meet greater demand.

I will 100% agree with you on this. They are only paying firefighters $13 an hour while they are risking their lives, disgraceful. I hope this gets rectified immediately. Puts the other thread about restaurant workers in the Hamptons complaining about their salaries in perspective.

That's awful (the pay rate) and absolutely ridiculous and should be raised - to more than $15. but, I am curious as to what the "average" salary is, not just the starting pay rate (but again, not at all arguing that it shouldn't be MUCH higher)

Re: Biden pushes to pay firefighters above $13 an hour
Odd because zip recruiter has the highest at $25 in NY, CA at $19 and the lowest NC at $15.99.
I wonder where the $13 came from.
USA wage from 2020: Highest NJ average $89,000 entry $46,000
California 2nd at $79,000 entry $43,000
Puerto Rico lowest at $28,000 entry $21,000

Federal firefighters are different than State and Town firefighters. They should be getting paid at least what the local firefighters are getting paid, and not trying to keep as close as possible to what the volunteers are "earning"...
$13/hour is terrible.

The average yearly salary of a federal firefighter is $55,000.

Re: Biden pushes to pay firefighters above $13 an hour
USFS firefighter pay is dictated by the federal pay scale, where most start at the GS-3 level
https://www.federalpay.org/gs/2020/GS-3
https://www.federalpay.org/jobs?page=1&keywords=firefighter&grade=3
Wildland Firefighter (Forestry Aid/Technician) Organization: National Park Service
Job Category: Forestry Technician
Location: Oneida, Tennessee
Wage: $13.45 - $16.90
Paygrade: GS-3 to GS-5
Based on the actual Federal pay grade site, firefighters can start at G-3, or $13.45/hour. A lot of positions are higher, with many in the G-5 to G-7 range, but I think all firefighters should just be bumped up to at least a G-4 or G-5, which is in the $15-$17 range.

Thanks I agree. Just didn’t know where they got the $13 as it shows much higher online.

You can't just look at averages. You have to look at the lower end to see what the newbies are making. Especially with the proliferation of fires due to climate change. I'm sure we'll be needing lots more federal FFers in the future.
