"Big Boy" Beds and bedding

With baby #2 on the way, we are thinking of keeping our nursery the same and making Kevin a big boy room. I was planning to go straight to a twin bed but now DH is thinking car bed. Has anyone got one for their "big boy" ? Where did you get it? pros? cons? Is it a twin or just a toddler bed?

Also if you bought car/truck/transportation themed bedding where did you get it and any pictures??? I am starting to look for ideas.

Pictures of rooms would be great too!

Re: "Big Boy" Beds and bedding

that is exactly what I did--my ds got a car bed. He never got out of it and loved it.
I do not have pics--I am sorry! I got the twin one not a toddler one--it lasted longer and then I sold it on ebay..they are like gold on there!
I got car themed bedding to go with it.

When my girlfriend's son was 2 she got him the toddler car bed, and now that he's almost 4 she's getting him a twin bed. She said he liked it but now is kinda bored of it, so she was happy she just got the toddler one.

So how long do these toddler ones typically last? I am so confused - they seem short to me. Some of DH's friends said their boys used it to 5-8 years old but toddler sounds so short to me....I feel like he already takes up most of his crib...

We put Caiden in his "big boy bed" when he was 20 months old. We went right into a twin bed. We actually got him the Little Tykes Twin Race Car bed. I love it and so does Caiden. It's great because the sides are a bit higher than the mattress so it keeps him in it! Chat Icon He's all over the place when he sleeps. I got it off of Craigslist for $75 including a boxspring. We only had to buy the mattress. We got a twin because since Caiden is a big kid it would be pointless to get a toddler bed, and we know a twin bed will last a long time. It's great and I highly recommend it! Chat Icon

As far as bedding, we did his room a hot wheels theme. We got him the comforter, sheets, valances, etc. The color matches perfectly with the bed we got. We also go a hot wheels toy box and cars toy organizer bins. We hung a hot wheels fleece blanket on the wall for decoration. We've also added a big Buzz lightyear rug and buzz neon clock to the room. Yes he still loves Buzz after 2 years! Chat Icon We're not finished decorating yet since I want to paint his room, but it looks cool because all the colors match and it just looks like a boys room! Denise, I *think* the mattress for the toddler bed is the same size as a crib mattress, so he might be more comfortable in a twin bed.

Re: "Big Boy" Beds and bedding

This bed business is heavily on my mind right now!! Benjamin needs to be in his big boy bed before we transfer the baby in his old crib. Even though I won't do it before she is about 3-4 months old, she will be in a bassinet in our room at first, I still want to make sure he gets his new bed before his sister is born.

My concern is that he will start just coming out of his bed whenever he feels like it. Did it happened to anyone?

I also still can't decide which bed to get though...Chat Icon

What's a twin bed? How is it different from a toddler bed? And also I know there is a day bed, what's that??

Gosh - these boys are growing before our eyes Denise!!! Chat Icon

I personally wouldn't invest in the toddler car beds and go with the twin size car beds (I think they're available)... I don't know, the toddler bed will be okay for Kevin for a few years, I don't see 8 years old though - not with our boys! HEHE! Michael will be in his toddler bed until we have #2, then we'll go to a twin. It just worked out this way for us!

Anya, every kid is different, Michael NEVER gets off his bed EVER. We have a bed rail and leave the part by his feet a bit open for him to come off if he needs to, but he never does, he calls and waits for us.

A toddler bed is a much smaller bed that fits the crib mattress. A twin bed is the next step up - you'll need a whole new bed, mattress, sheets, etc.

A day bed usually has railings by the head and feet and along the back of it and most often has a bed that can be pulled out from underneath.

I'm no bed pro, but I think I answered your questions! Chat Icon

He's in the toddler bed that the crib turned into... If/when we have another then he'll get his "big boy" room with a twin bed Chat Icon

yep its the same mattress.

I got them both toddler car beds, mostly because of the space issue, or I would have gotten them twin car beds.

Its DEFINITELY worth getting him a fun themed bed, you will guaranteed resell it for most of what you paid, so why not?? Chat Icon if you have the space def get a twin size one. although both my boys fit great in their toddler ones. theyre both about 35inches and 32 lbs. or so

theres tons of bedding online. right now we have sponge bob, car theme, thomas the train. and im looking to get different ones now, so let me know if you find good websites. Chat Icon

I moved Andrew into a toddler sized bed.... Space in his big boy room was an issue. But we also figured that we would get a good 2 years out of him in the toddler bed, and just in time to pass it along to Lauren when he was ready for a twin bed and yet another room decoration change. I felt that 2 years old was too young to have the same room for sooo long, KWIM??

They make the race car beds in toddler and twin size. Its really up to you and your preference. Andrew is big like your Kevin and he is just fine in his bed. he'll be in it at least another year!

We put Jared right into a full size. He's lucky...I didn't even have a full size my whole life!
I'm also looking for some truck/car themed bedding...I think that Domestications has some.

Re: "Big Boy" Beds and bedding

IKEA has great toddler beds. They are unique to IKEA so you have to also buy the mattress there since it is not a standard size, but it is super cheap. Their toddler beds are low to the ground like a reg. toddler bed, but way longer. So you will get much more use out of it. We have one for Jack. Here is the one we have:

They actually call them youth beds.

The bed was $70, the mattress was about $75 and the sheets are $4.99 each. And its very comfy and sturdy. External Image
