He lost. He came in last because his jockey pulled him back because he said he had 'no horse' running today. I just hope he is OK

For Big Brown to lose that badly, his injury must have been bothering him. I am glad his jockey didn't push him further and risk serious injury.

Any number of things could have caused BB to lose. he only lost THAT badly b/c his jockey pulled him up -- the admirable thing to do when he thought something was wrong. Had he kept going, he would not have been last. he wouldn't have won, but he wouldn't have been last.
The horse is NOT lame. I don't think it had ANYTHING to do with his injury. There's nothing to indicate it has anything to do with his foot -- and even the vets say they saw no unsoundness.
My guess is that he bled (a lung condition VERY common in race horses and generally not serious or life-threatening) - though certainly not desirable...
It's hot as hell and unseasonably so. The horse lost days of training due to his quarter crack. One missed day of training to a top thoroughbred can make all the difference. I ride 5 days a week and nearly fainted at the barn in the heat today.
The jockey should be given TONS of credit for displaying superior horsemanship by pulling up his horse. A bigger jockey would have beat the horse on.
There are too many possibilities to speculate now. I wish people would not jump to conclusions about his injury (which likely has NOTHING to do with this) and wait for the official word from Big Brown's vets. Honestly? I've known testy, moody, opinionated horses who some days just don't want to go. I'm as curious as anyone to find out what happened... but again I highly doubt this was his injury.
A small quarter crack like he had is very, very infrequently painful.

While I appreciate your experience with horses, my comment was just that, a comment. My overall feeling is that I am just happy the horse wasn't injured by a jockey who pushed so hard.

I agree. The jockey knew he would not make it in first so he did not push the horse. I am very glad about this.
Also, it is just very difficult for a horse to win the triple crown. Too many races too close to each other for the horse supposedly. Smarty Jones also lost the triple crown in 2004, when he was favored to win, and it was not due to injury either. That year a long shot won as well (Birdstone), just like this year's DA Tara.

I rode today too and it was hot
I watched the race with my DH and my parents and when my parents were complaining that the jockey didn't ride him well, I told them that the jockey had some common sense and didn't want to ruin a beautiful animal by pushing him in this heat.
After 22 years riding and working with horses, I have learned that on days like this it is just best to take it easy. I don't care how much money is riding on a race, the heat a dangerous thing/

Re: Big Brown
It was very sad - a real shame.
He is a BEAUTIFUL animal - absolutely breathtaking in person. His jockey is a VERY nice man - and I think he did the right thing by not pushing him - just wasn't his day today and that's alright. He still won two other races and is a wonderful animal.
The owners, I have to say, are some of the most genuine, down to earth, kind and compassionate people I have ever met. They opened up their hearts to us - invited us in to spend the ENTIRE day with them and their families. They had us escorted everywhere, we had passes to go wherever we wanted and we were seated, in the stands, behind the jockey's wife in the owner's box. It was unbelievable - they didn't have to do any of that.
And, afterwards, the first thing they said to me was "no matter what - even though he lost, we are still going to help little christopher" ... i mean, who does that?! they just had this HUGE upset and the FIRST thing they are thinking of is US and our best interest?? They are UNBELIEVABLE people - truly renews your faith in the human spirit, honestly.
It was a fabulous day - I look forward to telling my brother all about it when he is better and I look forward to him meeting them and thanking them. They blew me away today - they were so good to us and even with all they had going on went out of their way for us, to ask how Kenneth was and to offer up ANYTHING they could.

Agreed the Belmont is the hardest race to win since many horses can't take the distance. A mile and a half is a very long race! BB was bred for distance and probably the best bet for a TC in a long time, but you never know what will happen on race day. Whatever the reason, it just wasn't his day. I honestly thought Denis of Cork was going to win if BB didn't pull it out. I was shocked that Da'Tara won - but what an exciting nose to nose finish for those two horses.

It was really hot and humid out. Maybe the horse just didn't want to run. It's not like he knows it's a big important race. Props to the jockey!
