Big Decisions

I feel so overwhelmed right now. I have some big decisions to make.
A month ago I was depressed that I had nothing and now there are TOO MANY choices.
I got advice from my mom, DH, & friend but no progress. I feel like they are pulling me in all different directions.

How do you go about making a big decision?

I am about to go write out my pros and consChat Icon
And I bet I will be up all night tooChat Icon

Re: Big Decisions

Pro and con lists are good, but I often think about how the quality of my life will be affected by the choice.

For example, I changed careers and knew it would be tough to go back to school, but knew it was a temporary thing, even though it took 6 years to get my second bachelors degree. It was a tough choice, but I knew either way, I would be 6 years older. I also knew that if it didn't work out, I could go back tot he work I did before, just in a new location. The job I had wasn't making me entirely happy, so I needed a change, but just had to think about what kind of change would be best.

And when in doubt, I lean more towards what will bring me (and DH by association) more happiness.

You know, all of my options are SO DIFFERENT! I mean very very very different!
I wish I could post everything here to get more opinions but I don't think that would be the smart thing to do.

Re: Big Decisions

Julz, I think something to consider too is if you will be starting a family soon, and how that fits into your plans with each choice.

I am struggling with this a bit right now. If I knew for sure I was having a child, I would probably stay forever at my current job. But, if I knew we weren't having kids, I might be more adventurous and look for something a little more challenging (but less secure). We are also looking to buy a house soon and if I knew we weren't having kids I wouldn't be worrying as much about school districts in the areas we are looking at.

I agonize and analyze until I'm sick of thinking about it, then I go with what's been in my gut all along.

Good luck!!

You seem to make wise decisions for yourself. Trust your gut. Sometimes you have to take a risk. Sorry, I kind of feel like I'm talking out my butt since I don't know what specifically you are dealing with here. But what I'm trying to say is you're a smart girl who has made great decisions for herself up to this point, you've earned the right to trust your gut and take a risk.

I was in a similar boat- a big decision had to be made and it was a struggle. I couldn't post about it here either.

But I know I made the right decision- I went with my gut and reading this thread reinforces it. Chat Icon

Re: Big Decisions

You know, it's funny. I know I should make a list, a physical list of pros and cons, but I never do that. I'm so not that organized!

I usually just go with my gut.

Good luck to you! You'll make the right decision that is best for you!

I have a VERY hard time with big decisions as well! My biggest one right now relating to my career vs. having a baby. Thinking out the pros and the cons helps but what really makes the decision for me is thinking what I could absolutely not live without - since I don't know your situation I will apply it to mine - in a VERY oversimplified way ofcourse...

Although my career is important to me but I am also getting older as is my family and I want a big family of my own. Could I forgive myself if I ended up without achieving everything I wanted career wise or not achieving it as soon as I wanted it to...yes. But, if i put off having a baby and it became difficult to have one or more children like I want and my family wasn't all in good health to meet my baby...that I would NEVER get over. So despite there being more cons then pros of that decision...decision made!

Hope this makes sense and helps Chat Icon
