Big news for the weather nuts!
The National Weather Service office now is on Facebook!
Look up: US National Weather Service New York NY
You won't get detailed forecasts, but updates and stuff like that. Lots of cool maps and graphs, like this:
(This is showing this years snowfall vs the snowiest year in history. We broke the record for January, so now will we break the record for the year?)
They won't answer questions about flights and specific questions about when snow will start falling. They can't answer millions of people, but they are doing their best to keep the public informed.
BTW: The storm possibly coming this Tuesday through Wednesday is playing out just like last week's storm so far. Looks to come as a one-two punch and is iffy whether it's mixed precipiation, snow, rain or all the above. I am sure I will be posting sometime Monday. Have a great weekend!

One of the last few times I was on NWS I noticed the FB link and liked it.
Can't wait to hear about this next storm so I can put on my snow day pasties.

Re: Big news for the weather nuts!
Kelly -
I have a question if you have a minute.
I was watching channel 5 weather lady and she was trying to explain why we are having so much snow this year.
She mentioned that La Nina is on the west coast and that causes more precipitation and storms; and that there is a strong amount of cold air over the midwest that pushes the storms down into the gulf of mexico which causes it to spinach up on moisture.
She said there is a weak low and a weak high in the atlantic ocean which causes the 'north atlantic oscillation' to push the storm up the east coast.
(Dont laugh because I probably got that 95 percent wrong.)
So my question is - if the atlantic ocean had a strong high and a strong low, what would happen then? Would the storms be shifted out to sea, or would the go more up the middle of the US? I've been reading the wiki about the North Atlantic Oscillation but I can't figure it out.

Weather lady?!?!?
Are you one of those people that calls teachers 'babysitters' too?

I just looked at the wiki link you talked about and even I can't decipher that crap. I didn't bring my flip camera with me tonight, so I can't give a visual demonstration. I will look for a better explanation and see if I can post it.
In answer to your question about what would happen if the low and high were stronger: Then they would pull storms faster and stronger, not allowing a storm to get its spinach or steroids.
It's kind of like whichever system is stronger wins in the fight over territory. If you already have a strong high and low in the north atlantic, they will pull the storm where they want it to go and even steal its strength. But if they are weak, they allow a storm to gain strength on its own.
Does that make sense?

Nope. We are in a La Nina pattern. She is the b!tch sister of El Nino.

I'm sorry. I can't spell meteorologist properly without going over it 15 times so I fall back to 'weather people'. I won't do it again.
That makes sense, thank you for the explanation. If I remember back correctly she did mention either the NAO or the low/high moving soon so it would change the pattern.

Half the time I don't spell it correctly either. I think most of us didn't. That's why we were known as 'met majors' in college. We weren't good at spelling.
BTW: I still haven't found a good explanation for the NAO. Sorry.

I'll call you a NY Met next time. Don't remember if you would be happy or sad about that.
Your explanation was great, I appreciate it. Don't worry about finding more explanations you did a perfect job.
