Bikes, Bike Paths, etc etc...
Hi I am thinking about getting a bike this summer. I have zero clue what bikes people even buy anymore lol. I would want one for bike paths, like the Wantagh bike path, etc, flat surfaces like that. Do people buy mountain bikes for that? Are helmets required? I have no clue. I know I just want a bike but have no clue what type to get or what manufacturers are good, prices for a decent bike, etc. I just want a good bike that does not look like I am loser. help

Re: Bikes, Bike Paths, etc etc...
If you are planning on staying on bike paths, I would go with a Hybrid bike. I just convinced my coworker to go that route. It isn't as heavy as a full mountain bike, but it can handle hard dirt, curbs, etc. You can get a decent bike from Target or Walmart for around $150, but I would suggest going closer to $300. The extra quality and features are worth the money, IMO. Personally, I'm into the mountain biking (or as "mountainous" as you can get out here... , but there are a lot of good places to go with a hybrid bike.)
Helmets are required on the roads, but even on trails, I would never ride without one. The difference between a bump on your head and a concussion is $50.....
I'm a Trek fan, but I also have a Diamondback which is very good.
It's better to go to an actual bike shop, as opposed to Target/Walmart. Bikes come in different sizes, like shoes, and the wrong sized bike won't be a comfortable as one made for your height.
This is just a general post. Feel free to FM me if you have specific questions.

Oh wow thanks for the info. I see your point about the helmet, that was a dumb question of me to ask. Better safe than sorry always. I am really excited to get into riding. I rather spend a little more like you said and get a great bike. I have heard of Trek and know they have some great bikes.

I have a Trek bike and love mine but would consider an hybrid one now. I never go on dirt trail and my bike is really made for that. My bike is extremelly light. I probably should just change the tires.. I always wear an helmet even on a paved bike trail.
ETA: I have a mountain bike now.

My husband and I both have Trek bikes. We really like them.
Hybrid bikes are really great for bike trails, both paved and dirt trails.
And I agree with Shawn...definitely spend the extra money and get a helmet (and wear it). Trust me, if you're on the trails, you will see plenty of people wearing them.
A good bike shop will help you find the right bike and size for you, and also help you find the right helmet that is a good fit for you.
