bird watchers...I just had a cool experience!added pics
so we have talked about hummingbirds & how hard they are to spot. well i'm home today & i put cut up strawberries out in a feeder thinking the regular songbirds might like them. so I'm sitting there getting a few shots of my Mr. Cardinal that lives nearby & was feeding & suddenly I see this tiny litlle bird fluttering near the strawberries! I realized it was a hummingbird but it flew so fast I couldn't get a pic. at one point it actually flew right up to my face & then realized I was there & turned around, it was trying to check out my paper lanterns that have red bottoms.
So it was the red strawberry that drew that little beauty out where I could see him! Now I'm inspired to get a new hummingbird feeder, I had one at my old house but got rid of it because I never saw any!
I'll be back later with the pics I took of the other birds.

Oooh wow!!!
Dh just took down the hummingbird feeder in defeat, but I'm putting it back up tonight and buying some strawberries!
I have to get a tray feeder anyway!
We bird watched all weekend...I never get tired of it!
Saw the cutest black capped chickadee...they are so quick!!

Just curious, where do you live?
I didnt even know there were hummingbirds on LI!!
I saw and was going to buy a feeder this weekend, but then second guessed myself thinking there ARENT any hummingbirds-but then again, then WHY would they be selling them at my local gardening store?!

I live in Eastern suffolk on the north shore, its pretty rural here. I had a hummingbird feeder when I lived in Oakdale & always filled it up but never saw one so I threw it out when we moved, now I'll have to a new one!

That's so cool, congratulations! Yes, I've heard hummingbirds are attracted to red - red trumpet type flowers, red feeders. I didn't know how true it was. Now we know!

when i told DH about it last night he said we gotta get a new hummingbird feeder!
I have even seen oriole feeders, I'm considering one of those too since I never see my orioles eat the regular seeds.

love the pics! I love seeing the different birds come around since I got my bird feeder. Funny about the strawberry...I thought I saw a hummingbird here recently and I had a few strawberries out at the time but I put them out for the mama squirrel that comes to us!
