Re: Birth Control after pregnancy-IUD
i have the paragard. it was the only one i considered because there are no hormones.
so far the only side effect is a very long first period. i thought it was never going to end! i'm hoping that won't always happen.
my insurance paid almost all of it. i paid about $12.

Re: Birth Control after pregnancy-IUD
I've been considering the Paragard since there are no hormones, but I'm still not sure if I want a "foreign object" implanted in my body My OB said the major side effect is a heavier period for about 6 months and then it usually regulates.

Re: Birth Control after pregnancy-IUD
I have heard that paraguard is better than mirena...but I have no proof of this. But I will be getting para guard b/c I can handle the hormones.

Re: Birth Control after pregnancy-IUD
I have had paraguard since March 09. I was very unhappy with it at first- I bled and had cramps for 2 weeks straight after insertion and was seriously considering taking it out. However, it all stopped now I am pretty happy with it overall. I do have some side effects: my periods are longer and much much heavier. Another weird thing is that right after it was inserted I became a extremely regular when it comes to AF. I was always irregular and had longer cycles-35 to 45 days, but all of a sudden you I am a freakin' clock work and it comes the exact same day every single month! You would think it would happen if I had the Mirena inserted but I definitely know I have the paraguard which is the one with no hormones... Strange... But hay, it is actually nice to know up to the hour of when AF is coming, much easier that way.

Re: Birth Control after pregnancy-IUD
I have paragard. I like that it has no hormones but my periods are horrible. The cramps are terrible and it is very heavy and lasts for a long time. I don't know if this is because of the IUD or this is just the way my body is, but I asked my dr. and she said those are common side effects of paragard. I am getting it taken out this week - partially because I want to see if AF is better without it and partially because we are getting ready to TTC.
I'm not really sure if I would recommend it at this point.
ETA: I've had it since March 2009.
