Birth control when done having kids - tubal, Essure, pill or what?

I was supposed to get my tubes tied 4+ years ago when my DD was born via c-section. However, since she came a day early, I had to deliver at Good Sam where my OB was that day. They obviously do not allow them there.

Now, to this day, I have not used any birth control and am really at a loss. I am NOT a fan or hormones, so that really does not leave much. I tried the Paraguard and I thought that would work out well, but when I went back to have it checked at 4 weeks, I found out it had shifted down and they had to remove it. They offered to reinsert it, but I'm kind of on the fence because I really don't want to worry every month that it has moved. My OB is trying to sell me on the Essure, which is the blocking of the tubes with coils, but I keep reading horror stories about it online - I can't help myself. My OB is really trying to convince me to not buy into that, but I can't help but worry that if I end up in the small percentage of women with issues, I'm stuck with these nickel coils in me. Then I thought about just getting my tubes tied - surgery....sighhhhhh.....

DH will NOT have a V.....anyone have any input on having a tubal when it's not done during a c-section? I would CONSIDER the pill, but I'm afraid I'm going to gain a ton of weight on it. I'm in good shape, but I freak out at even a 5 lb weight gain. I also should add I'm 42 and definitely do not want more children.

Pill for us right now. A whoops won't be the worst thing in the world. When we start getting closer to 40, DH will have to get the big V. Don't think there is a better way

Pill after both kids and then dh had V 4 years after 2nd was born when my blood pressure was too high because of pill. Best thing we did, dont have to worry about anything and it is free every month :)

Birth control when done having kids - tubal, Essure, pill or what?

Happy Mirena user here. Its up for removal next year and I'm having them put another right back in. Been years since I've had a period. Happy camper. I'm currently 38 going on 39 have no intentions of having any more but I like the convenience of no periods on an IUD vs tubal things that are only one sided benefits.

ETA: plus no pill to remember, pack or refill. I travel now for work so I see this as a bonus, plus no need to plan for that time of the month, etc.

DH had a vasectomy 4 months after our 3rd child was born. We were young (I wa 27 and he was 36) but we were certain we were done. I have never had a moments regret.

Thanks for the replies!! Any recommendations for a pill that does not completely take over your body?

Do you check the strings yourself? That's one thing I can't bring myself to do, that's why I'm not rushing to have them re-insert the paragard.

On the pill right now but DH is going to schedule a V over the summer. He's not thrilled but knows that's our best alternative.

I had a paraguard IUD before TTC and I am 9 weeks PP and have an appointment to have a new one inserted. It is the best BC I have used. I checked the strings each month- it is no big deal- it literally takes seconds. Prior to getting my first IUD I took or to tricycles for many years and never had any side effects. I only stopped taking it due to health issues that prevented me from using hormone based BC.

Thank you - I'm considering having mine put back in and hoping it was just bad luck that it moved. I guess the worst thing that could happen is they have to remove again. Just hate dealing with the insertion and adjustment all over again, grrrr....

I am familiar with the Essure through my line of work. It really is safe and effective so I wouldn't buy into the horror stories you see online. It's a simple ambulatory procedure. You don't have to worry about hormones or your body going beserk afterwards. If I was going for permanent sterilization, that would be the way I would go.

My OB keeps telling me to stop with the internet. It is just scary reading that there are petitions to get it off the market and people having to get hysterectomies to get them out because doctors "don't believe" their symptoms or don't know how to remove them. I have this fear that I'll be in that small percentage of women who have issues and I'll be stuck with coils in me forever. Then I read people gaining weight from them. Do you know people who perform the procedure or see it done at work? Just curious. I wish I had more positive testimonials. Thanks for the reply.

I had a tubal after my 2nd. I knew realistically we were done but I still struggle a bit emotionally with the decision. I know it was the right decision for us.

I know that had I not had it, I would have regretted it, constantly worrying about pregnancy since I can't take hormonal BC.

no.. never thought to do so. Wasn't told to. I went back a few months later and they said the strings were good. Why do I need to check them? I see the doc, he sees them fine. Actually we just talked about it this last visit because he said they need to be long enough and easily seen so the removal and reinsertion was smooth. He said all was well.

Did you do it with a c-section or after the birth sometime?

you can still get a tubal.

Would you mind sharing why? FM if you prefer. Just trying to sort of reassure (no pun intended) myself that I'm making the right decision by not doing it. My OB talks about it as if he is an official endorser of the product. Today my thoughts are to give the Paraguard one more shot and then over the next few months get a consult for a tubal. I can't get a consult appt with OB until at least 2 months anyway, gotta love it. Then I was told that it could take months to schedule since they don't schedule much time at Southside - so I figure by that time I will know if I need to give up on Paragard.

wow.. never heard of this. I am not grossed out but no I would not be happy about having do fish around for my strings. that's crazy! Plus with my lack of periods the doc says the hormones have worked their magic that I don't actually have a wall for an egg to attach to (hence no need to loose it via bleeding) that is thinned out as much as it can. So I guess I wouldn't need to check anyway.

I was instructed by my OB to check the strings after my period each month-the strings really do not move so they are pretty easy to find.

If you can feel them, does that mean it's in correct position?

Yes. I was instructed that if I could not feel the strings it could mean the IUD shifted and I need to go in and have it checked.
