Birth Story and Successful Induction of Leah Christine 1/11/11
I can't believe how fast this pregnancy went and I am now writing my birth story! Its so surreal! So I'll start from the beginning. I started having internals at 35 weeks. Every single week I'd go to the dr and have zero progress. So finally at my 40 week 1 day appointment my dr spoke to me about inducing. He wasn't exactly sure the induction would work because the baby was still not engaged in my pelvis and I wasn't having any progress or contractions so he gave me the option of either a scheduled C section or to try the induction. I decided I wanted to atleast try the induction because I desperately wanted a vaginal birth. So we set up the induction for the following monday night. At 9:30am on Monday (the day of the induction) I got a phone call from my dr. office asking me to come in at 2:30 because he wanted to check me again. I had a weird feeling he wanted to talk me into doing the c section and I was so upset! So I went there and my dr. Wasn't even there. I ended up seeing the other dr. in the practice and she checked me. It turned out I was 1cm dilated and my cervix was soft. So the induction was still on! At 6:30 that night DH and I went over to Southside hospital to start the induction. I was given cervidil and that was left in overnight for 12 hours. The next morning my dr came in and checked me. I was now 2cm dilated. So my dr said that they would take me over to L&D and start pitocin. When I got to L&D I was allowed to shower then the other dr from my practice came in checked me (I was now 3cm), broke my water and started the pitocin. Almost immediately contractions started! They weren't bad, kinda like bad period cramps. My dr came in and asked how I was feeling and I told him it hurt a little but the pain was bearable. 2 seconds later the nurse came in and upped the pitocin.....then the real pain started!! It was excruciating! My sister kept telling me to get the epi but I wanted to wait because I always heard that epi's can stop labor from progressing. Finally, I gave in and got the epi. I could have kissed the anastesiologist! It was amazing!!! He told me that it would def help the pain but as I got closer to the end i would feel cramps down low that the epi wouldnt do anything for and thats when id be close to having to push. The nurse came in and checked me right after and I was 6cm dilated. She told me I had prob about 3 hours before the baby would be here. So I napped for about an hour when I woke I started feeling contractions down low in my stomach and in my legs. I told the nurse and she checked me and I was fully dilated!! They got the dr and I started to push. I pushed for 1 1/2 hours. Just when i thought I couldnt do it anymore I gave a BIG push and her head popped out! The dr wasnt even suited up in her plastic attire!! She jumped up to get it on and the nurse told me not to push again but I was so scared that her head was going to get sucked back in so I pushed anyway (prob not the best idea). Thankfully the dr got there right in time because she shot out like a rocket!! It was the hardest, most exhausting, painful experience of my life! But also the most rewarding!! When i saw her for the first time I couldn't believe how beautiful she was and that she was mine! DH and I both just cried! I could not love my little girl more then I already do! She is such a blessing! Anyone who is delivering at Southside hospital, has nothing to worry about!!! Everyone there, especially my L&D nurse, Janine, was amazing! Anyone that goes to Dr. Kasten or Dr. Egner also has nothing to worry about! I've been seeing Dr. Kasten for years and he was wonderful through my entire pregnancy! Dr. Egner was the one who ended up delivering my baby and she was equally as wonderful!!! Here's some pics of my little angel:
