Birth Story of Lucas Charles 2/9/07
Be prepared it MAY be TMI.
Well I got up early on Friday morning. Got to the hospital at 6 for my scheduled C/S at 7:30. I get settled in labor and delivery, get my IV's take stats etc. alls well despite how nervous I am.
8 o'clock hits and it's time for me to go down to the OR. I get wheeled down there. I meet with the anastegiologist in the prep area for the OR. He seems to know about what happened last time with the ketamine which made me feel good. He knows what I want to avoid.
8:10 hits and it's time for me to go into the OR. I get in there. They prep me for my spinal. They ask me if I am allergic to anything and I say yes PCN so they know (even though I have the band on my arm). He asks what antibiotics I have taken in the past so they make sure I get what I need. They check my chart from last time and see that I've gotten Ancef and it was fine so they say ok, got that. I get the spinal which starts to work immediately. They lay me down and finish preping me. They bring in Derek and they start to test my skin to see if I am feeling anything. They pinch my incision to see if it's numb which it is then they go about 1" up my stomach and pinch there and I feel it, sharp poking. THey tilt my feet up and head down to move the spinal stuff around some more. They give it another couple of minutes and it's slightly better but not 100%. They begin my surgery.
I don't feel the cut but I know what they are doing. THen they start tugging around with my skin and insides. I feel it. I felt it all. It was A LOT of tugging. Hard forceful tugging. I beg for something to make it feel better. They offer me some nitros to "take the edge off" I take it and immediately feel better. I even removed the face mask at one point to tell the anastegiologist that I loved him Then they start getting toward the baby. I feel A LOT of tugging to the point where I ask if it's almost over. Derek gives me his hand and tells me to squeeze it. I do and he tells me that I am almost breaking his hand off from squeezing and twisting so hard. The assisting doc leans on my ribs and they pull Lucas out. 8:42AM He cries immediately. I hear Derek announce it's a boy and I cry immediately. They doc brings him to me to show me his squirmy crying little body. They put the mask back on me and start pumping me full of med and the antibiotic Ancef. They wrap Lucas and Derek sits on the chair next to me holding him and showing me out new son. They are cleaning out the scar tissue in my stomach and I keep asking if it's almost over. It was not the best feeling at all. I wasn't numb enough. During the surgery I even asked if I could have some ketamine again (although it made me hallucinate last time I didn't like what I went through this time!) It was finally over. Time to go to the recovery room.
I get to the recovery room. All of a sudden I hear the alarms going off over my head and the nurses start making a fuss over me. They see I am bleeding a lot. My blood pressure had dropped to 60/40 at one point. They get my doc back in and give me something else and the bleeding stops and my BP stops dropping. I remember being in the recovery room telling myself not to fall asleep... knowing my BP being that low can't be good. It takes about 3 hours but I am finally able to go see Lucas who starts nursing like a champ from the 1st time he gets on the boob.
Yesterday when I was getting discharged my doc came in and told me I should NEVER get ancef again. EVER. It isn't penicillian but it is a relative. I had it once before and was ok but I am in that 10% of people who get it a 2nd time and your blood pressure drops dramatically your veins and arteries open up and you just start to bleed but luckily the other part of that never happened which is your throat closing up... Oh what could have been.
After spending a day or so extra in the hospital we came home yesterday. Emma and Jeremy love Lucas so much. They can't stop giving him hugs and kisses.
Im glad the surgery is over. I am glad I made it through what I did. I am glad I am alive. I am absolutly blessed to have my 3 perfectly healthy babies.
