Birth Weight Question
A woman in my building just had a set of twin girls (born at 4.11 and 4 lbs) They were home today. She delivered Friday.
I thought the babies couldn't leave the hospital until they weighed 5 lbs at least. Am I misinformed?

Re: Birth Weight Question
I had babies that weighed just over 4lbs each also and we were released before they hit 5lbs. They were, however, in the NICU for a week or so.

Re: Birth Weight Question
That was the "old rule" several years ago, at least that's what I was told.
My son was born a little over 5 lbs but was under by the time we left the hospital.

Re: Birth Weight Question
Mine were born at 4.2 and 4.11. they were in NICU for a week, then came home well under 5 pounds. The new criteria for discharge is they must be able to eat, and maintain there body temperature above a certain degree.

Mine were both born over 5 lbs but I asked that question before I delivered and they said that was the old rule.

Re: Birth Weight Question
Interesting! I have a few more things to learn! These babies looked so so very teeny, tiny.......I just have to wrap my head around the smallness of the twins! I am so used to 8 pounders these days!
Thanks Ladies!!!!

Re: Birth Weight Question
The weight is not the issue, they need to be able to take a certain amount of food, need to be putting on weight and holding their temp in order to leave. If they can do this under 5 lbs then they can go home.

Re: Birth Weight Question
My girls were in the nicu for 3 months and they really didn't concentrate on the weight as much as milestones they needed to do before they left the hospital..the big thing is Sucking, swallowing and breathing at the same time..when they could do that without turning blue they usually send the baby home.

Re: Birth Weight Question
that's an old standard...
My girls were born at 35 weeks at 4'14 and 5...they went home at 4'8 and 4'12..
I had asked at one of my visits to the NICU before they were born and they said that they need to be maintaining body temp and gaining weight to be discharged. Some babies do so at less than 5 and some at more than 5.

Re: Birth Weight Question
the weight really has nothing to do with when you can take the baby home. They want to make sure the baby can suck, swallow and breathe simultaneously without turning blue.
