Birthday Party Question-WWYD

Christopher is going to be 2 in a month ( ) and we are having a "smallish" party at home, just family and a few close friends.

My DH has a partner that he works with who is very nice, we socialize with them (we are actually going there today). He is married and has three teens. And they live on Staten Island.

Now, do we invite them? We like them a lot, but it is far, and Chich has to work that night (DH has pass days, so I know Chich has to work) and they would come if we invite them.

We are really torn, we don't want to put them out or hurt their feelings!!

If it's family and just a few close friends, I wouldn't be inclined to invite them if you socialize but aren't super close. I would think a coworker/friend, esp with teenagers (not kids your DS age), would not be insulted to not be invited to a 2 yr old's party. But if you really want them there and consider them close friends, I'd invite them and not worry about how far they live or if the DH has to work. They will gauge that part themselves and decide, KWIM?
