Black & White cookies
Anybody know if it is royal icing on top? I'm being cheap this year and thinking of buying the small ones from the bakery and putting pink polka dots on them for DD's b-day party, but don't know what to use.

I think its made of confectioners sugar and water and for the chocolate part same thing but adding melted chocolate.
You should ask the bakery that your buying from to see if they can do pink and white cookies, should cost you the same without doing the extra work.

Yupp, I did a quick google search and most sites list this as their recipe. It's a sugar glaze.
The cookie book Got Milk?, by Nancy Cullen, says a good approximation of a bakery glaze is to mix 2-3/4 cups of confectioner’s sugar with 5 tablespoons of boiling water and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract. The consistency should be a bit runny, but thick enough to spread, she says (thin it with more water, or add more sugar to thicken, if necessary). Once all the cookies are half frosted, stir 2 ounces of melted bittersweet chocolate into the remaining frosting (which is likely to need a little more thinning), and frost the other halves of the cookies.

Re: Black & White cookies
I make them at home and use a powdered sugar/corn syrup-based glaze, not royal icing. Love the idea of having pink ones made - so cute!

Re: Black & White cookies
Does anyone have a recipe for the cookies and the frosting? To make one side of the cookies blue (to make for a baby shower for someone having a boy) would you just add food coloring to the vanilla frosting? I am not a baker, so I have no clue!

Here is a recipe I had saved. I think I got it from someone on here but I haven tried it yet. : Black & White Cookies
Servings Per Recipe 8 large cookies
Ingredients
Cookies: 1-1/3 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/3 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 egg 1/3 cup buttermilk Black and White Icing: 2 cups confectioners' sugar 2 tablespoons light corn syrup 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 2 tablespoons plus 4 teaspoons milk 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
Directions
1. Cookies: Heat oven to 350°F. Coat 2 baking sheets with cooking spray. In medium-size bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt. In large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed, beat together sugar and butter until smooth and creamy, about 1 minute. Beat in egg until well combined. On low speed, alternately beat in flour mixture and the buttermilk, ending with flour mixture; beat until smooth.
2. Onto prepared sheets, for each cookie, drop 1/4 cup dough, spacing about 3 inches apart.
3. Bake 1 sheet at a time in 350°F oven 13 minutes, until wooden pick inserted in centers tests clean. Remove cookies to rack to cool.
4. Black and White Icing: In medium-size bowl, stir together confectioners' sugar, corn syrup, vanilla and 2 tablespoons plus 1 to 2 teaspoons milk until smooth but thick enough to coat cookie. Remove 1/4 cup icing to small bowl; stir in cocoa powder and remaining 2 teaspoons milk until smooth.
5. Turn cookies flat side up. Spread white icing over one half of flat side of each cookie, and chocolate icing over other half. Let stand at room temperature until set. Store airtight at room temperature for up to 3 days.
