Black tie personal drama!
Let me preface this by saying I have nothing against the venue or package weddings! I had a "low cost" wedding but, I didn't hype it up to be anything more than a nice affair that we could afford.
But my SIL who has never told us that she got engaged or invited us to any events sent us an invitation to her wedding with black tie written on it. It is not a fancy or expensive place that she is getting married at( once again, I am in no way bashing the place). But, I know this will not be a true black tie affair. My MIL circulated her dress among text message to my DH and it is far from fancy! My DH who has little to no relationship with these people feels we should go but, now he wants to rent a tux (we and a few select wives of the seven siblings are not in the bridal party). My sons (4 and 6) are also invited but I may leave them with my mother for the day. But if they go that would be another 2 rentals. I say it's silly because it won't be a true black tie affair even though she wrote it there. I already bought the dress below and now he thinks I should go spend another $200+ on a gown. I say we just dress up fancy in what we got. We are probably not going to be invited to do pictures with them and the family anyways. Do you think what I have is ok? Should he rent a tux just because he share DNA with this girl?

The dress you posted below is stunning and perfect for a black tie affair. I would have your dh rent a tux, but don't go top of the line. As for your sons they can wear suits, and yes they should attend if they were invited.

Love that dress - it's perfect for black tie. And no, I wouldn't have DH rent a tux. A dark suit is fine, especially for what you described

Totally agree. If he has a black suit and black tie, I say he's more than set. Who is really going to notice (or care for that matter)?

Agreed. Also, if your kids are invited it doesn't mean they have to attend. You make whichever choice is best for you.

Thanks everyone! One major reason I don't want to bring the kids in MIL acts like a total nut a family events! Crying and screaming. She try's to start with everyone. At our wedding she cursed me out. Last wedding ended up in a fist fight between her and the mother and sister of the bride. It's a lot to make sure my kids are not in distance of her crazy ways.
His sisters were so nasty to me regarding my wedding and I tried to graciously include them in everything. They were so rude and total sour pusses, they were in my party and ignored me the entire day. So as far as this sister wedding is concerned, she can go scratch. Sorry it turned into a vent.

Ofaaah with that update, just go with your husband in a dark suit. If he wants a tux, I would not fight him on it, as it is just not worth a fight to me. I would absolutely keep your kids away. Your dress is lovely and fine to wear. Have a good drink!

Your dress is perfect. Are his dad and other family members wearing tuxes? If he really wants to wear a tux, let him. As pp said, not worth the fight. I would not bring the kids to the crazy, too young to see all that crap. Go and enjoy the open bar!

Re: Black tie personal drama!
Wear your dress If DH insiists on renting a tux fine, but I think a dark suit would be fine as well. Don't bring your kids. Putting the MIL craziness aside, I wouldn't have a good time at a wedding if I brought my child.

Black tie personal drama!
I was actually in the bridal party where the dress was "black tie preferred" and my DH wore a suit, in fact most of the guys were in suits, only the BP had tuxes

Agreed. A black 3 piece suit would be perfect.
And your dress is gorgeous.
