Blood type
My doctor told me today that I have a rare blood type O negative. She said the baby will most likely be O positive since that is the most common type. I have to have a shot at 5 months because of this. Has anyone had a situation like this before?

I have A- and DH is B+. I have to get Rhogam (300 mcg) in a shot next week. The first time I got the shot was in the ER after I fell down my front steps. They typed my blood to be sure & then did an additional antibodies test to make sure the Rhogam was necessary b/c it was still so early for me. (I was only 16 weeks I think). It was a quick shot & no big deal
You will need to get this in recovery too after you deliver.

Re: Blood type
15% of the population is Rh- with the majority of those being O-...you only need the shot if your husband is Rh+.
As far as the babies blood type goes that will depend on what type you and you husband has...Is the dr assuming that your husband is O+?
I have had 5 children and I am O- their father is O+..each child in turn is O+.I receive one shot at 28 weeks and then another shot, in the hospital, after the baby is born. If the baby turns out to be Rh- at birth they will not give you the shot...
Way back in the day this was a very serious issue and women who were Rh- and had a partner who was Rh+ couldnt have more than 1 or 2 chilldren.
If you want to find out more do a GOOGLE search for Rh incompatability.

Re: Blood type
Thanks for the info! My husband isn't sure of his blood type but my doctor was assuming that he is O positive. Im definitely going to have him find out though.

Yes, I'm O negative and DH is O positive.
I needed the Rh factor shot as well.

Re: Blood type
Don't worry, I think it is pretty common. I'm A- and am getting the shot as well. My doctor says it is soley because of my blood type and has nothing to do with my husband's. I also learned that it doesn't affect this pregnancy, the reason you need the shot is for future pregnancies.

Re: Blood type
I get RH shots too. I got one with the first pg and got a another one around 6 weeks with this pg. If i understood it correctly, because I am O neg and my DH is B pos, the baby could have the opposit (+) than me and my body could reject it in future pg? Does that make sense?

Re: Blood type
I am A negative and I am not sure what my husband is but they just said I would need a shot and then the one after birth. As others have said I think it is pretty common. I am going to the doctor on MOnday and I am going to question more because I have only gotton my info from the fertility doctor.

Re: Blood type
I was O-, husband O+ so I too had the rhogham shots.
This is kind of interesting though....they said that even of my husband was O-, they were doing the shots anyway b/c in this day and age the so called father isn't always the father...if you catch my drift!! So to be on the safe side, they always do the shots when the mother is negative blood type.

If you have negative blood (O-, A-, B-, AB-) then you have what is called the RH factor. The doctor will want to know what blood type your DH is, but it's not completely necessary to get that info. Since negative blood isnt as common as positive blood, the assumption is that the baby will have a positive blood type. The rhogam shot protects the mother's body from rejecting the baby's blood should they mix.
This really isnt a problem/concern for the first pregnancy, since there isnt much of a chance of the blood's mixing. But you get the shot at around the 26-28 week mark, if I remember correctly. It's more of a concern (but still not a major concern at all anymore) when you have a 2nd or 3rd baby - because the mother's body already carries antibodies and will go into 'attack mode' if they mix with the baby's blood.
It used to be a big deal in earlier generations, but it's not a concern - we just need to get a shot during our pregnancies, then again in the hospital. Your doctor probably hasnt mentioned it yet cause you dont really have to do anything about it til either you get an amnio or you reach the 26 week mark.
My doctor HATES giving shots (kinda weird for a doctor to have this problem, huh?) and he had more of a tough time giving me the shot than I did. It's no big deal.
Hope that helps!
