bloody stool

i just changed her diaper and she had blood in her stool. I called the ped but i was wondering if it has happened to your babies, what it could have been.

Re: bloody stool

For us it was a milk protein allergy. We had to put him on special formula. The ped will probably want to test a dirty diaper. I suppose it could be something else also but this is pretty common. Good luck!

Re: bloody stool

We brought in the first diaper with bloody mucus, the doctor took a look at it and said it's probably a milk protein allergy (which means they can't digest the milk proteins, it does not mean they are allergic to milk) and had us switch to Alimentum. Then we took stool samples for 3 weeks to see if there was continued blood in the stool. I dropped them off the other day and am waiting to hear the results.

Good luck! I know how scary it is to find blood in the diaper. Chat Icon

Well, I never actually *saw* the blood in DS stool (it was microscopic). It was mucousy poop though, and he was super crazy fussy while bf. If it IS an allergy, you may or may not notice it at each diaper change. It takes a couple weeks to clear up also once you change your diet (if bf) or switch formulas (if FF).

Re: bloody stool

I just went through this with my DD. I waited until the 2nd bloody stool I saw to give the pediatrician a call. It was from a milk protein allergy. She was EBF up until then and he wanted me to give her alimentum for a week while I tried a dairy free diet but she got very fussy on it so I stopped after 2 days and went back to nursing. Now that I'm dairy free diet she's been perfectly fine.

Bumping b/c this happened to us last night...my DDs are on Similac - with Soy so how can that have milk in it, right? Soy isn't milk. I did BF a little yesterday so maybe it was something I ate that had milk in it? The doctor did say it could have just been from the pressure of passing the stool but I was just curious in case it isn't that and just checking about the soy/milk thing (I know dumb question, but figured I'd ask you girls!)/

A large percentage of babies allergic to milk are also allergic to soy. Not sure if soy would cause blood in the poop though. Chat Icon

I really think this is what it was and I'm really hoping that's what it was - there was no blood today thankfully!
