Bloomberg's State of the City bomb

Does anyone else work at one of the 33 schools in question?

Re: Bloomberg's State of the City bomb

Is there anywhere I can view the list of schools? What did he say is going to happen to them?

Between that and the talk we had about IEPs and expectations, I am feeling really low about my career choice lately...it's all very demoralizing

Re: Bloomberg's State of the City bomb

Here are the 33 that are slated to become turnaround. Schwags, your school is already turnaround so you would stay the same. These schools were either transformation or restart. Under his new mandate my school's staff would be excessed as of June 30th and our DBN would cease to exist. They would reopen with a maximum of 50% of the current staff under a new DBN.

Re: Bloomberg's State of the City bomb

My DH is a teacher at one of these schools. In fact, this year he is a "turnaround teacher" and he has been busting his @ss to improve the students' performance, he's been doing an amazing job and getting all kinds of praise for his department doing so well, and now this nonsense just basically throws all that away and makes his program pointless. It's so ridiculous. Also they are being told totally contradictory things, he was told in a school meeting that "at least" 50% of the teachers are being hired back. Just today his asst. principal told him the principal plans to hire back 90% of the current staff... none of them seem to know what's really going on.

His turnaround position came with a 15% increase on his salary, (and a ton more work, including extra hours) which was renewable for up to 2 years if he kept his "highly effective" status. Now, because they're "closing the school" the union people said they're not going to have turnaround positions at these schools - because technically they're new and not failing - so now he's out that money. Plus if he goes into the ATR I don't know if he'll get the perks he was getting for teaching in a high needs school, so best case even if he keeps his job there he'll be losing a lot of money we thought he'd have.

Sorry for the long vent, I'm just so frustrated for him, and us... it's never enough, no matter how hard he works. He started teaching during the hiring freeze so he worked at a crappy private school for 3 years, then got laid off because of budget cuts, got a public school job when they briefly lifted the restrictions for his content area, THEN he showed up a week later and they were like, "uhh woops we hired someone else for the same job and theirs is in writing so you're out of luck" (1 week before our wedding), miraculously gets this job right before the school year and now 2 years in this happens.

If anything, we figured out that since all these schools will be hiring 50% new staff, it will possibly be just a shuffling around of most of the displaced staff from one failing school to the next.

I worked at IS 339 before it was IS 339. Chat Icon That school's in its second incarnation. And it's a shame. The kids who go there come from a very rough housing project and it has struggled almost since it opened. They can change staff all they want- but if they don't look at the community and put things in place to really help these kids and their families (and 1 social worker for 600 kids is not gonna do it) little is going to change.

Re: Bloomberg's State of the City bomb

The first HS I worked in was one of the first large HS's closed and phased out. It is demoralizing for the staff and tragic for the community. Bloomberg is clueless.

My DH works at one of these schools and this is the biggest BS that I have ever seen. His school was given an opportunity to improve through a new program which they have been busting their butts with. Their freshman have improved. But if Bloomie doesn't get what Bloomie wants he throws his little fit!!

ETA: I also think this is part of his plan to get rid of all large schools.

Re: Bloomberg's State of the City bomb

I have friends and former colleagues in a few of those schools...

I have to say, I'm surprised by a few names on the list... and I'm shocked that others lasted as long as they did. It makes me wonder if Bloomberg just picks names out of a hat.

Re: Bloomberg's State of the City bomb

What I don't get is that everyone gets excessed and only 50% of the staff can get rehired, aren't,t the other 50% they need to rehire going to be coming from the other schools excessed teachers that will be ATR's? It's like musical teachers!
