Blue Nevus
Has anyone heard of this, or does anyones child have this?
My son was born with what looks likes some bruises on his hiney! The dr said that it is fine, and that it is called, blue nevus. My son is 4 months old, and I finaly looked it up. It says that it is usually round, and firm, and raised. My sons is in no way raised. They conpare it to a mole, which my sons is not. His really looks just like a common bruise (but I know its not, because it has not gone away). Does anyone know anything about it? Thanks!

Re: Blue Nevus
While it may very well be a blue nevus, given your description, it could be a few different things.
1. if it looks bluish in color (like a bruise) it might be a cavernous hemangioma. A cavernous hemangioma is one that grows under the skin. Have you noticed it getting any bigger?
Cavernous hemangiomas are almost always described as looking like a bruise. Where exactly is it in his butt? If it's on his butt cheek then there is very little concern - it will go away on its own, slowly (it will take years). If it is near his rectum then you might want a dermatologist to check it out, only because if it were to grow significantly you dont want it interfering with anything. Generally doctors take a 'wait and see' approach to them because they are almost always harmless (ones on face/neck/chest are different and could pose some concerns), but if you wanted it treated, there is surgery and steroid options.
2. It could also be what's called a mongolian spot. It's generally a bluish spot right around the buttocks or in the very lower back. It is not raised. They are more prevalent among hispanic/latino children, and over 90% of them are gone by age 2. Not a concern at all.
3. A nevus is generally brown (like a mole) but if it is a vascular anomaly, then the blood flow to the area could give it a blueish tint. It may darken in time. A nevus doesnt usually go away, but can be lightened with creams and some of the newer lasers.
If it is something that concerns you, I'd go to a dermatologist - preferably a pediatric dermaologist, but if you cant get an appointment, then a regular dermatologist is fine too. I know an excellent on in Manhasset if you'd like.

Sounds like a mongoliab spot to me. My son has it too on his butt. I used to be a nursery nurse, and saw it alot.
Not to worry
