BMW Owners

My husband is looking to get a new pre-owned car.

He is looking at BMW 5-Series from 2001-2003.

Are these reliable cars??? Looking for personal opinions.

Thx !

Re: BMW Owners

Yes--I had a pre-owned from Competition BMW--a great dealership. I loved the car. My Volvo is better in the snow, but I loved this car!

ETA: The biggest pain is that the windows seemed to short a lot and get stuck half open. Lots of BMWs have this problem....Mine was a 2001

I would make sure you had a service agreement or some type of warrenty

things tend to go on german cars after about 5 years- and the cost of fixing them is insane- my dad told me always lease- never buy!

We loved our BMW. Only negs were that every window motor blew on us and we had issues with the stereo system, needless to say, our BMW was in the shop quite often.

And as Lana mentioned, unless you get one with AWD, they bite in the snow.

I agree. Also they arent great in the snow unless you have AWD. But I dont think any rear-wheel drive cars are good in the snow.

But the ride is VERY smooth. IMO nothing else compares (except maybe an Audi)

Re: BMW Owners

I LOVED my BMW. The only issue I had with it was when the drivers side window got stuck open. At the time I did not know lots of BMWs had the same problem. DH is a licensed BMW mechanic and fixed it that same day - free for me Chat Icon

The only reason I do not have it now is because it was totalled when DH's nephew was driving it and was hit by a Penske 18 wheeler. DH and his nephew walked away with no injuries and the insurance company totalled out the car due to frame damage.Chat Icon

I think it's hilarious we all had window issues. See! I knew it!

My BIL has a 525is that's a few years old and it's beautiful. He hasn't had any problems at all and it looks as perfect as it did the day it came off the production line, but, he hates it in the snow. He also has an SUV, so he has other options in bad weather.

Ditto to this. That and they are practically USELESS in the snow unless you get AWD.

Other then that it is a great car.
