boarding a dog- please share opinions!

hi all

I am leaving for vacation on the 11th for one week. Usually when I go away, my mom watches my little bichon frise for me. But she recently moved into an apartment where her landlord wont let her. I cant find anyone else I trust to take my dog. My inlaws suggested a boarding place called Quail Run where they board their dog whenver they go away. I have never boarded her before and Im horrified. I was considering leaving her at home and having my neighbors come in and feed her and let her out etc. But with this extreme heat, I started to worry that a few visits a day might not be enough for her. I know my inlaws dog has always been fine at Quail Run, but she has never been to a place like that before. Im so horrified I am about to cancel my trip. Can some of you dog lovers please lend me some opinions? She is my baby girl and I am so upset!

I sympathize because we have yet to board the boys. I know we prob will have to someday but the thought breaks my heart. When we have gone away, my brother or sister have stayed and housesat. Could your mom or someone else stay at your place with your dog?

If not, I am sure you can find a place to board her that you feel comfortable with. Good luckChat Icon

Usually I board my dog at the vet's....if you have a vet you trust, you can try them. I honestly don't know of any other places, sorry. My pooch now lives in Ct with my parents.

Thats is a great idea and if your vet doenst board, you should call them and see if they have any recommendations

Thank you all
my vet boards, but the difference is that the animals are alone in the vets office all night long, whereas in the other place, someone is always on premises, and that makes me feel a little better.
But not much. Iam still so upset....

I boarded both of mine for 4 days in June and I really was miserable doing it but I made sure that the place I took them to was clean and had people on the premises at all times and that made me feel better.
Your baby will be OK. I went to Cozy Noses bed and breakfast and I think they enjoyed it, they got baths and I paid for some play sessions too so they could run around.

I take Gus for day care at the ruff house in ronkonkoma....they also have a place in port jeff...and in a pinch I've had to board him there...I trust them...I don't like boarding him, but at the same point, you might want to have your dog be familiar with a place like this...that way if you have have an emergency, you know that you're dog will know the facility and they will remember that you came back for them last time...

I've never had to board Molly - my family is usually fighting over who can take her.

Can you have a friend house and dog sit for you while you are gone? Maybe split it up between the neighbors.

I am paranoid and like to call 100 times a day...I don't think I would feel comfortable calling a boarder than many times without them thinking I am nuts.

You can check out this place www.caninecouture.com. I have used her from grooming but I know that they also have dog sitting and over night stays.

Good luck!

ETA the correct link.

Re: boarding a dog- please share opinions!

We used to leave Bama with a sitter when we lived in VA. He loved it (and he got to hang out with the sitter's dog, the Amazing Leroy Chat Icon ).
But when we moved here to CO, we couldn't find a sitter, so we had to board him. My stomach was in knots the whole time he was there, but he loved it. It's called Camp Bow Wow - they have indoor pens where the dogs are separated by size and/or play level, and there's an outdoor run they can access too. There's also a person that oversees the dogs while they're in the pen. And then the dogs are crated at night in their "cabins".
They also have a video camera so we could watch Bama through our computer!

Hopefully you can find a place like that. I'm sure your dog would love it!

Some places are good and some aren't. We boarded Casey at one where she came out so thirsty she was drinking dirty water from the street.

Another, she loved! I think as long as you go on a recommendation your little dog will be just fine! Chat Icon

Re: boarding a dog- please share opinions!

I would look for a place with 'cageless' boarding. Our pup did not do well when we left her at the vet for two nights (it was an emergency, we had a funeral, so the vet was out first choice.) Since then we leave her at our daycare that also does cagelss boarding, much like what Anniegirl described. She LOVES it there. I recently had to leave her there for 4 nights and she came home so tired from playing 24/7 with all her 4-legged friends-I swear she did not want to come home.

Re: boarding a dog- please share opinions!

this is where Gus goes for day care and the occasional boarding...

the owner is a former NYPD Canine office...the place is great, and it's cage less boarding...

Would you want to go into the city? I can recommend a place there.

Thank you for so many replies!

I, in fact, went to the li dog camp today and made her a reservation. I am not 100% sold, though, so it is able to be cancelled! Please share any expereinces that you have had with this place. Its the one in Ronkonkoma.

that's the one I bring Gus to, and when I pull up in front of the building, he's so excited to go inside, that I just open the car door, and he races to the entrance and paces back and forth until I get there to let him in....HE LOVES IT!
